1st step: Install wine. Type WINEPREFIX=/path to your steamapps/steamapps/compatdata/40970/pfx/ winecfg in terminal the like comrades advised in the comments below.
2nd step: Graphics tab > check "capture the mouse" and "emulate a virtual desktop". You may need that to freely switch windows by pressing alt+tab.
3d step: install protontricks (pip install protontricks). Install directplay (protontricks 40970 directplay). That is multiplayer fix.

Do not switch to Vulkan. I play 1440p with max settings and have 100+ fps with directx11. Framerate drops to 20 with Vulkan on my PC.
