Works perfectly
Compared to windows, I had to lower the the graphics settings to medium to get a smooth frame-rate.
I first tried playing on my Windows dual boot, and the sound didn't work (common issue with no official support, I updated the realtek driver to no avail). Then I tried on Linux with the latest proton from Steam, and it works perfectly fine. As mentioned the graphical performance isn't the same but that was expected.
Can be played in the browser
Only the browser version can be played with proton.
When starting the game, a splash-screen asks which interface should be used. Choosing the non-browser version stops the program with no messages outputted in the terminal. However the browser version works fine, and the gaming experience is the same
Use the native version
Windows version
The windows version does not work. regardless of the directX or proton version you choose. All you get is a crash or a grey screen.
Linux native version
Works like a charm
Other reports
Other reports claim to run the windows version, yet
- they do not force the use of proton through the game properties, so steam uses the linux version
- they speak about a file named
Civ6sub.exe
but this file only exists in the linux version
Random crashes, less likely when lowering graphics settings
Had to:
- uninstall wine and winetricks,
- add the PPA of faudio and winehq
- install the latest versions of wine, proton and winetricks
- run the linked script
WINEPREFIX=/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/7200/pfx winetricks d3dx9
WINEPREFIX=/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/7200/pfx winetricks videomemorysize=2048
Engine sound is missing
Custom mods have issues
Custom mods might not work as expected
Works great out of the box
It sometimes happen that fullscreen (or borderless window) leaves a space at the bottom (as if there were a start menu). Hopefully disabling then re enabling fullscreen solves the issue
After using the steam overlay, the mouse can no longer focus. Some player made mods may not work as good
