System level 30 FPS cap from Quick Access Menu.
The initial launcher doesn't seem to register default gamepad control. Temporarily switching to "Keyboard and Mouse" to emulate a mouse allows to click the "Play" button.
Pro - Works flawlessly with default controls afterwards. Con - Must perform at every launch or use touchscreen to tap on "Play".
Rare and brief (2-3 seconds) lags here and there. Only a minor annoyance.
Game does require GE-Proton (8-21 as of this writing), to run. Default stable or experimental proton gives error on launch and won't run the game.
Played full game without any major issues. Game itself still held up well for me, the writing and world design is excellent.
Game starts and gets to main menu but crashes upon pressing "Start"
Tried the following Protons without success:
Proton 9.0-1 (recommended by Valve) Proton 8.0-5 Proton Experimental GE-Proton 9-7
Running latest stable SteamOS 3.5.19 along with all latest drivers as of this writing. Same result every time on Deck, but game does work on Windows PC. Most likely a Proton issue.
Game would not run for me; kept giving me error saying "failed to compile global shader", or something along those lines. Managed to finally run it after installing "Steamworks Common Redistributables" from Steam app in desktop mode. Games works fine so far (about 8 hours in). Maybe best to play with mouse and keyboard though, as community controller layout is alright but may feel clunky. Have fun!
- System level 30 FPS cap with 60 Hz refresh rate.
- In-game resolution set at 960x600.
- FSR with sharpness at level 1.
I know it's an old game, but battery life is pretty good with these settings. I haven't measured properly; I'd say between 4-5 hours easily.
Very minor crackling here and there.
Fix for black pixelated characters and objects in Noveria and Ilos:
Method 1 (only needs to performed once) https://cookieplmonster.github.io/2020/07/19/silentpatch-mass-effect/#
Method 2 (requires re-doing steps at every launch) https://steamcommunity.com/app/17460/discussions/0/522729359284940264/
System-level 30 FPS cap, with 960x600 resolution and FSR enabled.
Not sure if it's a bug, but the game didn't launch for me until I manually installed Steamworks Common Redistributables from Steam library in Desktop mode.
Game is playable start to finish with only some rare performance and graphical issues as of this writing.
30 FPS capped with medium graphics settings.
Game would rarely drop frames drastically (maybe down to 5-10 FPS) for about 5 seconds while playing. Does recover automatically right away.
The initial launch of the game takes about 2-3 minutes, but afterwards runs without issues.
Game runs mostly fine after the initial setup of Rockstar Launcher, which can be a bit frustrating but nothing major.
30 FPS capped with low/medium graphics.
Game crashed like 3-4 times during my 90 hour playthrough, most of it in the first few hours and maybe once during the last few. Usually only crashed while loading game from main menu if I recall correctly.
I played full game at locked 30 FPS, and other than the rare crashes, occasional graphical glitches, and brief stutters, it's pretty smooth.
Only 2 major issues are the occasional out-of-sync audio in cutscenes and random control issue. Both can be taken care of for the most part.
From the Steam Deck quick-access menu:
- 30 FPS limit
- Half-rate shading kept on
Out of sync audio during cutscenes. Turned all graphics setting down to the lowest possible and afterward audio syncs most of the time. Possibly can't be completely eliminated.
Potentially game-breaking controller issue. Controller icons randomly change to keyboard controls and no controller input registers properly. Happened occasionally; 2-3 times during my roughly 28 hour playthrough so far. Only way I can fix this is to close the game completely and then restart it.
The game is mostly fine after the settings adjustment. Old game but very good once you get used to the controls. Can feel slightly grindy at times but still fun.
