Sometimes needed to click in and out of the window for the game to fully cover the screen
My game installed and the configuration launcher would open but the game would not launch because the Physx package was not installed into the Proton prefix. This can be remedied with Protontricks, which can be installed as a flatpak.
• Open Protontricks and select the default wineprefix for Dragon Age Origins
• Select “Install a Windows DLL or component”
• Select physx, click OK and follow the prompts for the install wizard
• When finished, cancel/close out of Protontricks
If the game is missing the DLC content from the Ultimate Edition:
• Open Protontricks and select Dragon Age's default wineprefex
• Select Run Explorer
• You will need to enter the following into the address bar manually to reach the hidden .steam folder: Z:\home\[Your User Name]\.steam
• Browse further into \steam\steamapps\common\Dragon Age Ultimate Edition\redist
• Run these two executables in order: DAUServiceSetup_Steam.exe, DAOU_UpdateAddinsXML_Steam.exe
• Close out of Explorer and close/cancel out of Protontricks
If your DLC still does not appear, it may be possible to download the individual DLC packages from https://help.ea.com/en/help/faq/dlc-for-classic-games/#dragonage and install them manually using wine or protontricks, though doing so may be meticulous and time consuming.
Some guides advise adding the following command launch options to the game. This should not be necessary to launch and run the game, but may improve performance: PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 PROTON_USE_D9VK=1
Somehow this game was always muted on my Steam Deck, even in the itchio version prior to the Steam launch. Apparently it was muted by SteamOS itself in its internal sound mixer. The fix was to boot into desktop mode, launch the game, and unmute it from the volume mixer in KDE. Other than that there were no performance issues whatsoever.
Game was muted in SteamOS in its default installation.
Played using The Force Engine instead of the included Dosbox version, installed from flatpak
Game is 100% playable out of the box, but it is running using an older version of Dosbox. The aspect ratio looks stretched to me, and as a DOS game you will not be able to use widescreen resolutions. Highly recommend using The Force Engine which is available via flatpak on Flathub. This gives you access to modern resolutions and quality-of-life improvements like save states and subtitles. When I launched TFE it automatically picked up the game files in Steam, although it launched with a warning that the Dark Forces game files were not present in TFE's native directory. It will work fine either way, but you can copy the folders to the specified location if the warning bothers you.
Ran out of the box with no issues, performance was indistinguishable from native Windows version.
Initially the game would not launch and gave an Invalid CD KEY error. I was able to resolve with Protontricks to edit the registry, which can be installed as a flatpak. First make sure you can access your CD key from Steam by going to the game in your library, then select Manage > CD Keys from the gear icon.
• Open Protontricks, select Unreal Tournament and its default wineprefix, select Run regedit
• Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Unreal Technology\Installed Apps\UT2004
• If the above path is NOT present, create it
• Create a new key with a String value, rename it to CDkey and set the value to your CD key from Steam. Close out of the regedit and protontricks and relaunch the game.
Opted into the public beta to install the native Linux version, works identically to the Windows version so far as I can see.
