same as my last post; dxvk & corefonts
same as my last post; permanent black boxes when moving game windows on fullscreen that went away on windowed mode

windows on fullscreen create permanent black boxes when moved around; fixed by playing on windowed mode
it used to work, but now it doesn't (i don't know what causes it to not be detected)
i haven't tried any 3rd party addon aircraft, but texture and scenery replacements work fine. i'd assume addon aircraft would also work well because the gauge dlls automatically get trusted in fsx.cfg
this game runs quite well, just follow memefutbol17 and Preloading's posts; that's what i used to get it running

WINEDEBUG=-all WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d10=n;d3d10_1=n" %command%
Mainly followed memefutbol17's post to get the game booting.
On the default resolution of 640x480, the mouse isn't lined up with where the game thinks it is. You can fix this by setting the resolution to your system's native resolution.
Opening and moving windows in FSX causes black boxes to show up. They persist (even when the game isn't in focus). Your mouse also turns big and black. To get around this, you can play the game in windowed mode.
Missions are broken, the preview text only shows the first line, Clicking on a mission tab on the details tab that you are on causes an error, and the panel that shows details about your current mission is empty
Addons:
This is important if you want most addons! This problem causes gauges (and any addons with DLLs) to fail loading. By default in windows, it asks you if you trust the DLL. Wine (proton) does not have this implemented. You will want to browse fsx.cfg, find the section containing [Trusted], and change the end to =2
Sometimes the terrain flickers white. Also some addons have panels misaligned.
Any windows in the game (eg atc menu) causes black screens when moved in fullscreen
Addon trusting popup does not appear, mission are pretty broken
From my brief testing (multiplayer has almost no players), it seems to work

Game is very buggy due to Microsoft lack of optimization in FSX. Better buy XPlane (think so)
PROTON_USE_DXVK=1 %command%
Free Flight Menu was bugged, I could begin playing because I was able to memorize the whole menu.
You can't use Mouse Yoke and see around the cockpit because you will see the plane cockpit but you also will be moving it with your mouse
Game was lagging a little bit
I was unable to play the game with another command line options, only with this one. I'm hardly playing this game and I believe I will be moving to XPlane 11.
If you are not a patient person, don't buy it.

Borked, does not work at all.
WINE_DISABLE_VULKAN_OPWR=1 DXVK_HUD=full %command%
Installed DXVK and corefonts, still does not work, logo/banner appears, and instantly crashes, dont waste your money on this.

Works flawlessly. Free flight menu is no longer borked, good performance and reduced or non-existant stutters with default aircrafts.
WINE_DISABLE_VULKAN_OPWR=1 DXVK_HUD=full %command%
Set launch options, use proton tricks. Any proton version >= 7.0 should work.
How to make it work:
1- Select any proton version >= 7.0
2- Launch fsx. It will crash.
3- use protontricks to install 'dxvk' and 'corefonts'
4- create native only override for d3d10.dll (" *d3d10 ") and d3d10_1.dll (" *d3d10_1 ") with winecfg or launch option
5-Launch again. The game should work just fine, including free-flight menu and properly flying.
Additional notes: launch option WINE_DISABLE_VULKAN_OPWR=1 should only be used if your WM is wayland-based. You can use a reduced DXVK hud with the launch option DXVK_HUD=1.

I tried installing d3dx9 d3dcompiler_43 quartz and vcrun2005. Install XML Parser 4.0 SP2 with exe as the protontricks option are using SP3 as recomended by one of the posts in protondb
Launching for the first time after clicking accept on the license agreement shows a splash screen and then crashes, subsequent launches crash silently. Tried many combinations of proton versions, launch options, protontricks, nothing has any effect in behaviour whatsoever.

I tried only some training, and they were working well.
DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command%
Install at least corefonts to enable the text menu once the flight are loaded. Additionally, install d3dx9 d3dcompiler_43 quartz and vcrun2005. Install XML Parser 4.0 SP2 with exe as the protontricks option are using SP3. To use DXVK, install at least d3d8to9 (copy the d3d8.dll to the game root folder where FSX.exe are located). I also install dxwrapper following this guide which seems to help also with some grlitches. There will still black bars on free flight menu but once you go flying, it will look relatively normal.
Black bars of free flight menu. But things still clickable.
Black bars of free flight menu. But things still clickable.
Not sure why newer proton version wouldn't work but I suspect it is related to DXVK version used. For more reference to help with tweaking I go to the AppDB entry for FSX

So I think I might have stumpled over a fix for the black screen problem. It is the screen resolution. I switched to the older 5.13-6, from the 6.3-8, and both my monitors went black instead of just my primary left monitor, same as usual, can hear the person explaining the mission but nothing more. Decided to look around the settings, just fooling around, found the screen resolution and decided to change it, voila, the screen displays properly. Settings > Customize > Graphics, change your screen resolution. For me it was the max one, from1024x768x32 to 1920x1080x32. Left monitor now displays the game, and the right monitor stays black, but I can play my missions no problem. Tried changing back to proton 6.3-8 but it was still black with the new resolution. Launch options didn't matter between PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command% and PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% , both worked. Will try later with higher details, but for now happy that it works. Just wish I could window it.

Changed to older Proton, works fine.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%
Changed to older version of Proton, version is 6.3-8 , works fine. Well I didn't try to get to fly but yeah menus atleast are working fine..
MANGOHUD=1 PROTON_LOG=1 %command% -FastLaunch
Mouse position and click placement are off by the height and width of the window frame, leaving fullscreen and returning fixes it (Alt-Enter twice)
After flying for hours over the poles (literally trying to circumnavigate the world in fast time) the game develops a tendency to crash before making it around the planet.
The main downside to this game is that it takes FOREVER to install and then forces updates (it is Microsoft, after-all). Steam counts your install time as play time because the final part of the installation occurs while the game is running, so getting a refund if you want it might be more complicated.
That said, I have a good 30+ hours of flying time in this on Linux... been a few weeks since I've played, but the updates haven't seemed to destroy its ability to be played.
Can play online multiplayer, freeflight menu glitches out, right-click menu during flight not visible
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Game crashed after i set an unknown setting on the right-click menu (text was not visible)
Right-click menu while in-flight does now show text
Was able to connect to a multiplayer server effortlessly
Bugs out in freeflight menu, black screen when joining multiplayer.
PROTON_USE_DXVK=1 %command%
Freeflight menu does not work. Shows 3d rendered plane preview but the rest of the menu bugs out. Tried to join multiplayer session. Black screen, was able to access ESC menu and exit, but was not able to see anything besides black screen.
protontricks'd d3dcompiler_47, d3dx10, d3dx11_43, d3dx9_24, d3dx9, and d3dxof; which of these are actually required I don't know
Heavy artifacting at the freeflight menu / graphical degridations at the Free Flight menu.
Fullscreen locks the game resolution to 800x600.
World FPS is eh, HUD and other framerates are atroctious
DOESN'T WORK - DON'T BUY
Yeah no, this doesn't work at all. Don't waste your money if you're a Linux user.

Initial menu is visible albeit buggy, and play does not start.
There is issues getting in to free flight due to the free flight menu flashing black except for where the plane preview is. Upon the main gameplay window opening and the progress bar completing, the screen remains black. Audio is fully functional though.
Side note: The game will NOT start on any Proton version > 6.3.8
Black screen when trying to go in another menu than the home page

Free flight menu was black, but was able to click "fly now". When it loaded the game it was still a black screen - couldn't play.

Black screen.
The free flight menu was black but i was able to click fly now. But when it loaded the game it was still a black screen.
While on any menu other than the "Free Flight" menu, everything was perfectly fine. But in the Free Flight menu, everything turned black. Was able to play though...
To be honest, it runs better on Linux better than my computer with Windows 10! Also, in my old review, the reason I couldn't launch it is because I didn't have a vulkan driver installed...

Black screen when pressing `fly now`
tried WINE_D3D, no changes

Opens menu, can't click "Fly now!"
Used Proton 6.3-4; Launch options: "PROTON_USE_DXVK=1 %command%"; Fonts weren't glitchy or anything, just the wrong font everywhere. Menus were working, the aircraft preview was visible; I could change to any aircraft I wanted.
Doesn't even launch the main menu
The game itself actually runs pretty well, though there are some minor problems
Free flight menu is a black screen except for the aircraft preview which shows normally. Buttons will show up when hovered over so navigating the menu is still possible if you know where they are. In game, none of the menu text is visible at all, only the background and the actual buttons, interestingly enough. They still work and will open menu windows, but have no text.
Viewing tooltips and some aircraft interactions (namely radio frequency selection and the knob on the gps in my experience) cause the game window to be unfocused. This pauses the simulation in both fullscreen and windowed modes and causes fullscreen to minimize. You can probably fix this by running in windowed mode and turning off pausing when the window isnt in focus (found in settings).
Tested with proton 6.3-4 and proton experimental. The game runs pretty smoothly outside of the minor graphical glitches. If you run it in windowed mode and don't mind not being able to see the menus, I think this game can be considered playable.

Borked. Crashes when starting "Free Flight"
Tried Glorious Eggroll's 5.21-GE-1 Proton with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
. Menus after the inital menu were just black blobs and it crashed when trying to start a flight.
window would randomly close and reopen
The game crashes too much and runs very slowly. Joystick controls are a bit of a mess and black screen on menus and no text in game.
3d textures and lighting was a bit off
Logitech was seen as xBox 360 controller
1 fps
Most versions crashed
Menu was black when loading 3d models and most versions crashed on flight start
Proton 5.13-2: Launches into flight but freezes on first frame. Proton 5.0-10: Crashes when pressing fly now Proton 4.11-13: Crashes when pressing fly now Proton 4.2-9: LOADS FLIGHT! I got to a point where I could pause the flight and it was moving. Now text though and graphics seem a bit off. Did crash when I pressed arrow keys though idk if it was a coincidence. Second run crashed in menu. Third crashed when fly now. Proton 3.16-9: First launch I got into game and could fly for a bit then crash. Second launch I could fly without crashing until I ended flight. Third time crashed when fly now
All of the above: Black Menu when rendering 3d model in menu screen and no text ingame.
I have given up because I have not learned configuration yet. All this subject to change for your devices.
The main menu does not load the graphic properly
Although playable, you have to be such a god that you have remembered where all the menu items are
Menu was all black, although buttons showed when hovered over. When in game there was no text
Severe graphics issues make it practically impossible to manage. Flight is ok though

Some menus are shrouded in a black screen. Moving menus around (knee board or ATC menu) or closing them leaves a black screen that won't redraw where the menu was.
I tried the "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%" command as suggested. The game runs with significant enough graphics bugs on my set-up to leave the game unplayable. The bugs persist on the lowest graphics settings.

Borked
Launcher isn't working that's why i couldn't play it
Had few issues like FPS stability and main menu is black meaning you will have a hard time finding buttons.
Proton-5.9-GE-3-ST GloriousEggroll
Rudder pedals are not working
A bit of FPS drop
Just FPS drops and main menu is bugged.
Main Menu is black
If you are new to the game you will have a hard time finding where each button is placed since everything is black except the aircraft "3D" model which shows you how your aircraft look, other than that there was slight FPS issues but it is way more stable than the last version of Proton GE 5.8.
Slight flicker in one of the menus, just ignore and launch the game, then all is fine.
Run it with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% and use Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF - Those settings might not be needed but they worked well, I need to try more combinations.
Flickering menus, rudder pedals not detected
Flickery, garbled graphics on some menu panes, blank dialog boxes
Only joystick and throttle detected, Thrustmaster TFRP rudder pedals not recognized. Rudder is recognized by other flight simulators and utilities.
