I tried running the game with nouveau drivers and I was required to use proton_use_wined3d11=1 to even launch the game. Even after launch it was extremely slow. I decided to switch to the nvidia proprietary drivers and it ran perfectly fine without any commands. I decided to add two GL commands and install gamemoderun to better optimise the game and it works flawlessely.
If you can memorize where the mines are it is perfectly fine.

Mine flagging didn't work
TLDR: Most version of proton mine flagging doesn't work and some icons don't load.
The game crashes too much and runs very slowly. Joystick controls are a bit of a mess and black screen on menus and no text in game.
3d textures and lighting was a bit off
Logitech was seen as xBox 360 controller

Proton 5.13-2: Launches into flight but freezes on first frame. Proton 5.0-10: Crashes when pressing fly now Proton 4.11-13: Crashes when pressing fly now Proton 4.2-9: LOADS FLIGHT! I got to a point where I could pause the flight and it was moving. Now text though and graphics seem a bit off. Did crash when I pressed arrow keys though idk if it was a coincidence. Second run crashed in menu. Third crashed when fly now. Proton 3.16-9: First launch I got into game and could fly for a bit then crash. Second launch I could fly without crashing until I ended flight. Third time crashed when fly now
All of the above: Black Menu when rendering 3d model in menu screen and no text ingame.
I have given up because I have not learned configuration yet. All this subject to change for your devices.
Didn't work in all versions of Proton
I tried to run the game in all versions of Proton. None of them worked, but one of them had the quick flashing of a window. I believe that version was 5.16
Finally Works on the new Proton Experimental!
Previously, all the proton versions I tried and even the native just did not launch the game when I pressed play. Recently I tried to run the game on (I believe to be the latest version of) Proton Experimental. The game works flawlessly, controllers, audio, graphics, and everything else. Multiplayer still does not launch, but I am overjoyed to say the game finally works!
