Installed the Proton EasyAntiCheat Runtime package via the Tools section in Library
Just played with a friend in a private room. Not sure if this would change anything.
Installed c1-launcher (https://github.com/ccomrade/c1-launcher)
VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11 mangohud gamemoderun %command%
No need to skip the launcher, at least with Proton Experimental. REDlauncher isn't as annoying as EA/Ubisoft launchers and plays nicely with Proton
It's a GoldSrc native game. Works like a dream on most/all hardware.
Game runs perfectly
Proton 7.0 seems to have solved the issue where the game must be run in VR mode. Non-VR mode launches perfectly
Crashes the entirety of Steam when loading into a map

Crashed my whole PC only once. No idea why. But only once.
I was genuinely surprised to see the game perform this well. We're playing Microsoft's flagship titles on their "enemy" OS. The fact that they haven't directly blocked it from doing so is... odd to me, but cool, I can play Halo now :)))

First boot took a while
game used to crash upon startup halfway through loading. used flatpak to get around this for a while, but it caused issues with my native client. recently, Debian backported a much newer Mesa version to bookworm, which solved the issues i was having for probably over a year
Bugs out in freeflight menu, black screen when joining multiplayer.
PROTON_USE_DXVK=1 %command%
Freeflight menu does not work. Shows 3d rendered plane preview but the rest of the menu bugs out. Tried to join multiplayer session. Black screen, was able to access ESC menu and exit, but was not able to see anything besides black screen.
Can play online multiplayer, freeflight menu glitches out, right-click menu during flight not visible
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Game crashed after i set an unknown setting on the right-click menu (text was not visible)
Right-click menu while in-flight does now show text
Was able to connect to a multiplayer server effortlessly

You can fill a semi-truck with nitroglycerin, exactly how you could on Windows.
Game runs perfectly.
Seems to play raw audio data instead of actual sound
Used a patch by a Reddit user on the Progressbar subreddit
Audio by default would play raw data. Used the Reddit patch script (https://www.reddit.com/r/Progressbar95/comments/u6ekxj/i_fixed_sound_on_linux_issue) and fixed the issue
Performance is a bit sliggish with the "Visual Shader" enabled. Can be fixed by going into the game "control panel" "display settings" and disabling. Not sure if Proton or just my PC
Game says it's playing however game never opens window or appears in System Monitor
Works and launches under Proton GE, but still has a few bugs with fullscreen and the Origin launcher
mangohud %command%
Had to go into a tty and manually kill the game via htop because Alt-Tab rendered the mouse cursor unable to focus anything. This also disabled me from interacting with the game besides moving a visible mouse cursor to move the first-person view. No keys passed through to the game. Haven't tested windowed mode yet
Origin causes my system to be incredibly slow after Titanfall 2 is closed, and must be stopped manually
I'm going to try the Northstar launcher with this game and see if that resolves the Origin staying open issue
mangohud gamemoderun %command%
Installed Arial and Lucida fonts
Cinnamon causes all sorts of issues. Fullscreen mode starts minimized and refuses to un-minimize. Borderless fullscreen is off-center and out of the display border. Windowed mode causes massive lag. This is an issue exclusive to Cinnamon as far as I am aware. Openbox functions perfectly.

Installed Northstar Client
VSync causes heavy stuttering
On Debian 11, using Cinnamon, Titanfall would refuse to un-minimize most of the time, especially in fullscreen, would not be centered in Borderless Fullscreen mode, and would be a stuttery mess in Windowed. The only fix for this is to change to a different desktop. I used Openbox and GNOME, which had worked fine. Upgrading to Debian testing/Bookworm, looking for a fix for these issues, updated video drivers and hardware support for a future graphics card upgrade, fixed these issues in a Cinnamon update. Fullscreen still behaves erratically, but windowed mode works fine.
EA's launcher can be annoying, eats RAM and fails to quit with the game frequently
I exclusively use Northstar Launcher to play online. Northstar officially supports Proton, and they have their own version of Proton designed to work with Titanfall 2 and the Northstar Launcher. https://northstar.tf
The game plays fine now. I've had so many issues with playing it before, but it should be a good experience with other setups based on more modern distros.
