The game is playable on intel igpu, huge improvement, just on crash. Should be a breeze on more potent hardware.
lag of input due to low fps
low fps on planets
Just on crash during several hours of gameplay
40 fps
just a bit small and no resize option
has controller support but you need steam and pad mouse to launch. played 2hrs everything ran well.
Planetary textures are gridded over with white patches.
On proton 7.0-6 the planets are missing some textures consistently. On proton experimental the textures are there 90% of the time, but there's occasional texture pop. Other than that everything seems to work perfectly.
/nolauncher
Minor flickering when you're on a planet and zoom out to see the whole surface. But that doesn't prevent you from playing, so it's a minor problem.
With just Proton Exp. the game was running like a comic book, regardless of what level the settings were.
As I said, just Proton (Exp.) isn't enough. I did make the symlinks and added the /nolauncher to the launch options but that didn't fix the major problems with comic book-like performance (meaning 10-15 FPS).
The thing that FIXED the game performance for me was to place these files in the directory next to the game exe: d3d9.dll, d3d10.dll, d3d10_1.dll, d3d10core.dll, d3d11.dll, dxgi.dll, D3D12Core.dll, d3dcompiler_46.dll, d3d12.dll, d3dcompiler_47.dll, mfplat.dll. I know that the game probably uses only 2 or 3 of these files but I'm too lazy to test and see which ones it uses, so I copied them all. :) In any case, placing these files next to the game exe fix the FPS issue and now the game runs even better than it ever did on Windows, LOL
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% /nolauncher
Followed instructions given by BabylonAS. You need to create few symlinks and disable the launcher in order to get the game to work:
Go to steam/steamapps/common/Star Control - Origins/Game folder:
ln -s ../AdventureStudio/
ln -s ../Assets/
ln -s . Game
See configuration notes.
Some text is small and may be diffcult for some to read.
This game is simply a "no go" with either Proton version
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% /nolauncher
I tried all Proton versions from 7.0 up until the oldest one - this game is simply a "no go" with either one of them - the game won't even appear on the screen. Only Proton 4.11-13 caused something like an attempt to start (black screen for a few seconds, then shutdown like the rest of the Protons). Symlinks and disabling Esync didn't help at all.
disable launcher, create symlinks

With some tweaks, the game launches and plays the introduction cut scene just fine. Computer completely freezes after the cut scene, though.
Proton: 5.0-9 (I apologize for the disorganization. First report here, and upon writing this, I was only given the "Extra Notes" section to type in.) At first, the game would launch the launcher and show a grayed out play button, and following the recommendations of others, I used the launch option "/nolauncher" to disable that, along with the other instructions listed by matiasgr. Tried launching the game again - before the loading screen, I'm prompted with a message about my page file being too small. (I've had this problem before with certain other programs run through wine, but it's never been a problem.) Bypassed the launcher just fine, and made it to the loading screen. After 15 seconds or so, however, my screen would go black and the only way to exit the game and do anything else on the computer would be to completely restart the computer. Would have to do this physically rather than digitally, since everything is locked up.
Eventually found someone who mentioned installing vcrun2017 via protontricks. Did this - the game made it passed the loading screen to the introduction cut scene. Did not make it passed that, though, and locked up my computer the same way as before.
May very well have something to do with that page file warning, but I've had no luck with figuring out how to fix that.
Got it to work after setting the symlinks and adding the "/nolauncher" flag in the launch options. I didn't need to disable esync at all.
Performance was bad on some planets with horrible weather

After all, it works. With a couple extra links, and perhaps a better video card than my iGPU.
I’ve disabled ESYNC following one of the reports here so I could avert some issues with it, in case there would be any. The game starts without ESYNC but I haven’t checked if the performance is significantly different.
The game doesn’t run normally via Steam because once started with Steam Play, Stardock’s launcher is run in the Game folder instead of the game’s base folder and can’t find the executable (which is at Game/StarControl_DX11.exe), hence the Play button is grayed out. I’ve worked around it by creating links to all folders (AdventureStudio, Assets and Game itself) in the Game folder. I’ve also disabled the glitchy launcher screen with /nolauncher, as I do for other modern Stardock games, but this doesn’t have to do anything with that specific problem.
Aware that Star Control: Origins used to have problems with VC Runtime, I’ve installed vcrun2017 via protontricks, but seems like it’s probably not necessary.
Some of the textures, or rather objects themselves, didn’t appear, mostly on planetary resource gathering and boss battles (invisible ships made fights harder), but it could be in fact due to me using integrated graphics (which could have run out of memory) and thus might not have to do anything with Proton.
When I have started the game for the first time (which was with fullscreen enabled), the game didn’t cover the entirety of my gaming screen, but was offset towards the bottom right corner. Possibly not exclusive to Star Control as I have experienced something similar while trying to run GalCiv2: Dark Avatar (from GalCiv2 Ultimate’s installation, added as a non-Steam game in my Steam library --- for some reason it used regular Wine instead of Proton).
I expected the game to lag, given my integrated graphics, but didn’t expect that the entire operating system will sometimes lag as well. As a result, Steam’s FPS sometimes has nothing to do with reality --- is that the stuttering reported previously?
No crashes, but rarely the game would hang with a constant significant CPU usage; not sure if this is a bug in Proton or within the game itself.
Praise Jeff!
Click "Links" in the upper right of the launcher. Click "Open Game Folder" Find "StarControl_DX11.exe" and execute it.
Causes the GPU to completely hang after around 30 seconds in hyperspace. Looks to be specific to AMD based on my logs.
Ran very poorly with esync disabled as other reports suggested but ran well with it.
As psymin previously reported:
Stardock Launcher launches. Play button is greyed out. Click "Links" in the upper right of the launcher. Click "Open Game Folder" Find "StarControl_DX11.exe" and execute it.

I managed to get this to run by forcing Proton 5.0-2 and setting launch setting to PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%
Even using `protontricks 271260 vcrun2017` did not do the trick. Dos not run at all.

Unable to launch campaign
I tried all of the tweeks and tricks described here but none of them work. I can launch the game but not neither the campaign nor any other gameplay.

Unless you can live with the stuttering framerate at certain parts in the game, I wouldn't recommend it.
Installed protontricks and with that installed vcrun2017. Then it works. By default the new game doesn't work. Protontricks: https://github.com/Matoking/protontricks

Menus work great and gameplay at first seems to work. However, planetary exploration introduces a ton of stutter, even though framerate appears to remain high. Also a lot of stutter in hyperspace and when a lot of other ships are on the screen. Turning down graphics settings didn't appear to have much of an effect.
Clicking "New Game" on the main menu flashes a smaller window for a split second but the game doesn't start.

New game don't start. Can read the codex only. Mscorefonts installed, vcrun2015 cannot installed(error), esync disable.

How to run: Used the Gog Version, simply ran Proton 4.11
$ '/home/$(user)/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton\ 4.11/dist/bin/wine' StarControl_Dx11.exe
from the starcon:origins directory. Played the full game, finished it.
Performance: on an rx570-8g and a ryzen 2700, the performance was great. I played 1080p 8xAA and it only stuttered once during the final boss battle.
Nothing too special, but didn't work when using the steam launcher, had to use the command line. I'm sure there's a tweak somewhere to fix that.

Game seems to start perfectly, but it fails when attempting to play a new game, with a prompt appearing for a split second, then vanishing. I tried for 5 hours to get this game working, but vc2015, vc2019, etc, didn't work even when properly installed. No windows version changes worked, and all in all, it just will not run on my configuration.

Tried installing corefonts and vc2015. No luck starting a new game.

Initially "New Game" did not work, but works perfectly after installing corefonts and vcrun2015

Only used proton in Steam...disabling Esync or D3d11 did not work.

WINESERVER="/home/psymin/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Proton 4.2/dist/bin/wineserver" WINEPREFIX="/home/psymin/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/271260/pfx" winetricks -q corefonts vcrun2015

Launches fine and plays intro video... everything seems ok, but the menu just does not register (despite playing the sound) that you want to start a new game when you click the new game button.

still crashing when loading a game same on 4.2-1

This version of proton downloads corefonts and vcrun2015 by itself. Disabling Esync is the only thing that needs to be done manually. The game seems to running perfectly, though I noticed some framerate drops in hyperspace and while exploring certain planets. Reducing graphics settings helped.

Intro video plays, menu screen works, but "new game" does nothing. Did all of the below - disabled esync, installed winetricks, corefonts, and vcrun2015, problem still persists.

Manually added vcrun2015 and corefonts as suggested below without success. Makes it to the title page but New game button pops up a box for a ms before disappearing. Options, codex, and credits seem to function normally.

Game starts and gets to the main menu, but the New Game button just pops up a box for a second then does nothing. I have tried disabling Esync and it does not help.

Impossible to actually play the game -- “Loading Campaign” once, and nothing after that. Options, Codex and Credits appear to work properly.

used winetricks on proton 3.16 beta prefix and installed corefonts and vcrun2015. it worked like a charm then.
