For anyone out there that sees this post, I was able to figure out how to install and run KAM Remake on my Steam Deck.
Firstly, go into desktop mode on your Steam Deck. Next you have to install Wine through the Discover Software Center. Next you need to buy the game off GOG.com and download it with the standalone installer, not the version with GOG Galaxy. Then install the exe using Wine. It will fully install the way it would on Windows.
Next, download the KAM Remake install exe. Once it’s downloaded install it with Wine the same way you installed the original game. Now you’ll want to add it to Steam as a non-steam game. In Steam go to “Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library” and click Browse. My KaM_Remake.exe was located here:
/home/deck/.var/app/org.winehq.Wine/data/wine/drive_c/KaM Remake
It may vary for you but it should be very similar. Once it’s in your library click on the cog icon then Properties. Go to the Compatibility tab and click “Force the use of a specific Stea
Changed right click and left click.
Had to manually enable full screen in the game settings.
I would recommend installing it the way I described, that way you can also use the KAM Remake which fixes many old bugs and adds many new QOL features.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Game (classic) has no window mode only fullscreen.
Played with Proton 5.13-6 and params PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Version for Linux is not working.
HD version has only English language.
Classic game renders in the top-left, rest of the screen is black. KaM Remake runs great.
Classic game has occasional crashes, KaM Remake runs great.
So the "native" Linux game ships the Classic game (with expansions) and a community mod, KaM Remake. Both are Windows exe's and it bundles a wine version + helper scripts.
Neither this "native" bundled Wine version, nor forcing the Windows version to be downloaded and running Proton through steam worked well for me. It had regular crashes and bugs.
But! KaM Remake fixes some of those bugs, and adds some quality of life features. The only issue is the bundled Wine didn't run (at all) on my system.
Using either system wine-7.7 from my distro's package manager, or using Bottles, both Classic (bugs included) and KaM Remake run well. I've played a few campaings on KaM Remake as the quality of life features make a huge difference.
TL;DR
Install wine through your system package manager, then:
wine <path-to>/Steam/steamapps/common/Knights\ and\ Merchants\ Historical\ Version/Game/KAMRemake/KaM_Remake.exe
Native version doesn't work at all, forcing Proton works perfectly
Use proton for this title
Native version does not work, all options fails to start, however if Proton is forced, it works just fine
