First boot must be launched in windowed using the "-window" launch argument. After picking the native resolution fullscreen worked just fine.
Out of the box you cannot connect to any server, requires a server plugin for it to work. But after that, it's pretty much flawless.
The game boots but VAC does not let you connect to any server. This can be fixed with this simple patch put together by the community: https://www.mediafire.com/file/aiiahblok2s2ymm/NTLinuxFix.zip/file
After you drag and drop into the game's folder you can connect to servers and it runs great. The Lutris script that requires you to install Steam into the WINE prefix is no longer needed. Last report was made in error as the plugin itself does not work without authplugin.vdf, which isn't included in its release, thus making it useless.
Lutris script no longer needed, server plugin required in order to connect to servers
Need to launch the game in windowed for the first time as it defaults to 1024x768 in fullscreen and KWin did not like that at all. After that it's fine.
Hated installing Steam for Windows in the game's prefix just so you could play the game? Me too. Good news: you don't have to do that anymore.
Download the latest release of the server plugin and drop it in steamapps/common/NEOTOKYO/bin/
. After that, launch the game with the -window
launch argument and set your resolution.
Running through Lutris is necessary for server play
VAC cannot authenticate, so servers will auto-kick you for no steam logon. Using the Lutris install script to run the Windows version of Steam fixes this, or you could host a server yourself with VAC disabled.
Everything else about the game is largely the same between the Lutris standalone script and just running through Proton (minus the VAC thing and some garbled text in console)
NEOTOKYO° can run on Linux just as well (or better) than it does on Windows with just a few extra steps while utilizing Lutris or WineSteam
NEOTOKYO° is still unplayable via Proton, but there are now several other installation options for it:
- A Lutris install script over at https://lutris.net/games/neotokyo/, you need to select the Standalone version for it to work (lutris:neotokyo-standalone)
- WineSteam - a setup script using flatpak, so it even works on Steam Deck!
To install WineSteam, first get the dependencies (not needed on Steam Deck, already installed). Here's how you would do that on a Debian system:
sudo apt install git util-linux flatpak zenity
Then simply run:
bash <(curl -L https://github.com/GleammerRay/WineSteam/blob/main/winesteam_curl_installer.sh?raw=true)
The installation script will ask you a few questions, pick the defaults for all of them. Once you log into Steam, just click the Run NEOTOKYO°
button in WineSteam to install and play it.
You can find the source code for this install script along with a detailed usage guide over at https://github.com/GleammerRay/WineSteam/.
Can't Alt-Tab back into NEOTOKYO° if using game-provided fullscreen mode - causes black screen. To avoid this, use your desktop manager's fullscreen toggle instead.
Steam UI occasinally has some graphical artifacts and small glitches, Valve does not support running Steam using Wine.
Smooth gameplay, everything works, including voice chat.
If you have any questions, submit them to the WineSteam repository. Fight on and have fun! 【=◕‿↼✿=】
THe game runs, but not its anticheaat
VAC disconnect after a minute or so.
Maybe a workaround exists to get VAC to connect properly, but I didn't look into it.
Consistent Server Disconnection
Constant disconnection after a few minutes
Runs like hell! (in a good way).【=◕∇◕✿=】
The game needs a full installation of Steam in its prefix in order to run. Some GPUs are also unable to run it with DXVK enabled. These two problems lead to it being Proton incompatible.
I created my own script that sets up a new Wine prefix, installs allfonts and installs Steam inside. You can get it at https://github.com/GleammerRay/WineSteam.
To use it, do the following:
0: Install all prerequisites mentioned in README.
1: Download the repository from the aforementioned link.
2: Run bash winesteam.sh
in its folder to set up Wine Steam.
2.5: During the setup, enable Graphics
-> Emulate a virtual desktop
in Wine configuration menu for better image quality and less crashes.
3: Enable View
-> Small Mode
in Steam to reduce Steam client bugs and crashes.
4: Install NEOTOKYO° in Wine Steam.
5: Quit the game and use bash nt4gbpatch.sh
to apply 4GB patch to it.
6: Run bash install_desktop.sh
to add Wine Steam to your launcher.
Extra fog, can be fixed, use fog_override 1
in game console to disable
Low FPS (~25fps, playable) on a few maps, but a different person reports very high FPS using the same method
FastDL is not working, download maps manually and place them under NEOTOKYO/NeotokyoSource/maps
(most maps can be retreived from http://bonahnsa.site.nfoservers.com/neotokyo/maps/)
Follow Vape Shaman's guide below to install this game, if it doesn't work try what I did.
My steps:
- Install bottles using flatpak.
- Make a bottle with a gaming environment.
- Go to "Preferences" by clicking on the cogwheel icon, set FSync and Windows 8, disable virtual desktop and bottles runtime.
- Go to "Dependencies" and install "allfonts".
- Download Steam desktop installer, run it inside a bottle to install Steam.
- Install NEOTOKYO.
- Have fun! 【=˶◕‿↼˶✿=】
- To close the bottle either right click on the steam tray icon and press exit or press the stop icon next to the program in the list.
The font might look weird on first launch, had to launch again to get it to work right.
steam://run/244630
Americans :/
Follow the guide of 100%vape shaman but there is a new UI for Bottles that could fooled you. SO note : 8. No X button, just a Triangle(open) or a square(close) and there is a optionselect above the window with "kill all processes". 9. I tried "small mode" but my pc crash, it's surly because of my old pc :| 12. In" programs" there there will be 2 programs "steam" and "Neotokyo°" and "Neotokyo°" have as lunch option "steam://run/244630" and disable "Use a virtual desktop". I only run "Neotokyo°" and it's working fine.
Small text is corrupted
Small text is corrupted
Had to do some wumbo jumbo shenanigans with wine virtual desktop to get it working
The controller config I made myself: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/174364630175449089/964691462392516639/neotokyo_configuration_2.vdf
Crashes Steam as soon as you try to play on a server or play on a local server
The game says a connection to the VAC servers could not be made and you get disconnected after a couple of minutes. I.e. the game is unplayable.
VAC
I don't know what the other guy was smoking but the -steam -steam trick does not work. You cannot play this game online, and since it's a multiplayer only game that makes it unplayable.
In case of protontricks, I went to winecfg, and set the resolution to emulate virtual desktop
VAC
Go to properties of this game and add this -steam -steam
. And yes two times, after adding this I was able to connect and play this game.
game won't launch
Distorted menu fonts.
You will be kicked from VAC servers, which is all current ones online. You'll need to get some friends together with hamachi or something.
Can't play multiplayer
If you try to join a server you will get kicked by VAC anti-cheat after a minute or two. If you play offline you can still run around empty maps but there's a weird fog over everything.
No main menu
I just saw a black screen. At least it didn't freeze my entire system or something.
Works OTB, no tweaks required
Runs almost as good as on Windows, completely playable.
There may be some issues with crashing on mapchanges or joining servers, however, those issues are also present in Windows too because the game is not that well optimized (It has some memory leaks). You just need to change Texture quality to "Medium" and it will stop crashing.
Fonts on main menu can be very small or distorted on higher resolutions, but It's still legible. So far I had that problem with every source based game I ran trough Wine/Proton, so I guess it's some quirk of the engine itself.
Crashes immediately after loading the main menu screen. No menu options visible only background. Tried disabling steam overlay, using different steam play versions and completely reinstalling steam and games. Borked.
Crashes before even loading up the main menu. Works fine under normal wine 3.XX.
