I applied a few tweaks to config files, as recommended in the PCGamingWiki
In the autoexec.cfg I changed host_thread_mode to 0
In the zoom_p3_fix.cfg I changed cl_threaded_bone_setup to 0
None of these are Linux specific, the game runs without it, they're just to fix achievements not unlocking properly and to avoid crashes when multiple NPC are spawning in some maps
I finished the campaign in The Insane Path without crashes
I REGRET NOTHIIIING!
Runs on the original Steam Deck
From what I understand this is a buggy game, I have not completed it yet but so far, so good.

From what I understand this is a buggy game, I have not completed it yet but so far, so good.
In the configuration file in Postal III\p3\cfg\ I opened the 'autoexec.cfg' file and added physx_enabled 0 r_threaded_particles 1 r_threaded_renderables 1 snd_mix_async 1 right to the end of the file.
The game ran fine until I got to the part where I had to break the lab animals out, would freeze every 30 minutes or so. The configuration additions helped fix this.
Without adding the lines above the game ran great until about halfway through the story and would constantly freeze at around 30 minutes in sessions, after however the game wouldn't crash at all allowing me to continue, this is a common thing so it's not a Linux vs Windows problem but a bad PC release problem.
Nothing to complain, everything runs smooth because it runs on Source engine, alt+tab and steam overlay with screenshots are working just fine. The only problem with this game under Proton is that the achievements doesn't unlock for some reason.
Works well on Steam Deck since Running With Scissors removed DRM
Objectives menu is pretty small.
Running With Scissors released a patch for the game on October 13th, 2023, and it appears to work effortlessly now. They also included a Steam Deck control scheme. The only problems I ran into were performance and ui issues the game already had, nothing due to Linux/Proton.
Steam Deck:
- Use 'Postal III: Steam Deck Layout' controller layout
- In Mouse settings, set sensitivity to 1.5
- In 'Advanced' Video settings, set everything to Medium
- In Steam Deck's Power Settings, set Refresh Rate and FPS Limit to 45
Advanced Video Settings changed to Medium across the board. Inside of Steam Deck's Power Tools, set Refresh Rate and FPS Limit to 45.
Just due to the nature of the game, it's the same on Windows.
Even though the game is not good, with the settings I used, it'll be a much smoother experience.
Works now on the latest Proton versions. I do recommend it to actually properly activate it (Steps on PCGamingWiki) instead of us the NoDRM.
No need to use older Proton versions now, to play your favorite bad game! I regret nothing.
it took a little getting used to, but playing postal 3 on the steam deck felt better optimized than the pc and kinda fun to play
Loading in a new stage or entering a new cutscene can cause the game to stutter graphically and music to skip for a few seconds but usually it catches up and loads you in/back, otherwise it will crash the application and end your game session
This is easy enough to get running without having to tinker too much, you will have to change the compatibility to launch the game but after that it will play
You can install Postal 3 for the steam deck, you just can't run it on the steam deck
loading the game from the steam deck gives you "intial error (error code:v0xE2003053). close all applications and try again. If this does not help press 'Error Report' and send the report to product customer support." Trying this doesn't help the game run, it just repeats the error message back to you.
Game is already broken, no less or more crashes on linux, at least you can piss on people
runs fine, no issues, but for some reason the settings say i have dx3, on windows it told me dx11 which my gpu supports, but that didnt effect anything, still playable <3
Crash when run
Internal error (error code: 0xE2003053). Close all applications and try again. If this does not help, press "Error report" and send the report to product customer support.
Report:
Important error details (already included in the report): 5.70.29.7; E2003053; ES: 63, 0
Needed to launch the game with "-windowed", then manually switch to my resolution, otherwise the game would crash
Performance is subpar, lots of stuttering and sub 60 fps (on high) and the game can crash sometimes but generally works
