The games starts, freezes after seconds and I'm only left with the option of closing it, which, doing so, crashes the game
I'm on Pop_OS 22 LTS and running a xfce interface, doesn't work
An update to my old report. The game now works tinker-free and flawlessly without a single issue.

Steam version no problems, just picked Proton Experimental, no bugs, no glitches, smooth gameplay, fully stable, but ofcourse don't expect Xbox Live Options or login ;)

Wine assertion failed when running on Wayland, does not happen with X11
I don't know if it's because of Nvidia, but it crashes when using Wayland. Under X11, it runs flawlessly.

Xbox Sign-in doesn't work

GE-Proton9-15 doesn't launch the game. -- RIP Proton9.0-3 and Proton8.0-5 the game start but with a wine assertion failed error that quit the game. --- That's better ! Proton7.0-6 the game start, no wine error but it crash to desktop --- Almost there....
Proton6.3-8, the game start without errors and crashes ! --- Wololo
Of course, Microsoft still doesn't let us to use our xbox account..

Works out of the box.

Stable and runs ok if you can stand the low FPS
Zooming out results in terrible 40-ish FPS and it's really hard to see what's going on zoomed in. AoE2 DE runs at 120fps all the time.

Works out of the box!
It worked out of the box for me.

Do not try to login to Xbox Live. The login wizard does not work. If you click "Xbox Live Profile" once, it will try and fail to log you into Xbox Live. This will prevent you from being able to play the game until you reinstall it.
In game text is small.
The control scheme is a bit complicated. I recommend using a mouse and keyboard.
The game tries force you to login to Xbox Live, but the signin dialog sequence doesn't work.

Works great wihtout any custom launch options. Only problem is the Mouse can be moved outside of the game.
Mouse can move outside of game

Works out of box
Button highlights in game look degraded but still usable. No other graphical issues.
No tweaks or changes needed - worked out of box installing through steam. Minor graphical artifacting when toggling certain buttons in the in-game interface (e.g. automatically reseeding farms) but the artifacting is limited to the buttons themselves and just seems to be a texture or recolouring not showing properly. No impact on gameplay and no other issues encountered - essentially flawless.
gets a red screen when i load a game to play
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% NOSPLASHPRELOAD
Perfect out of the box. Played skirmish, used alt-tab, all OK.

The mousse some time dissepear and in the main menu it's not the custom mousse but nothing else.
Change to proton 5.13-6

I installed this on mint linux, The game attempted to run and then the game would not even open
Tried multiple compat. Layers- experimental; GE; 8.0

None
I tried 3 different compat. Layers Experalmental; GE & 8.0 nothing worked

mouse and scroll speed is a bit weired to setup correctly, plays natively

Rare but sometimes it will desync, similar problem on windows aswell.
Lan is greyed out and as such unplayable
Runs great, no tinkering needed.

Had to disable the Steam overlay otherwise it kept crashing.
Recently valve updated their overlay and interfaces on beta channel, causing some issues with games like AoE and Elder Scrolls Online. If you face any problem, just disable overlay and try again!
Is not running. My game just close to the desktop (CTD) with "Assertion Failed!" error.

Ran out of the box on current experimental :)
Fonts are small.
I've tried Proton Experimental and version 8.0-1 and both don't work due to "DirectX Renderer" issues. I did try using the " PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% " but that didn't work for both "Experimental" or "8.0-1".
Only "7.0-6" works out of the box for me.

AOE:DE works out of the box on Arch Linux using Nvidia proprietary drivers and Proton Experimental. No tinkering is required, but I added some startup commands to skip some video intros per its PCGamingWiki entry. Graphics are beautiful and game play is smooth and fun.
The only caveat (for Arch Linux) is ensure that you install the proper "lib32-vulkan-driver" and "vulkan-driver" metapackages when installing the "steam" package (it will prompt you to select one for your particular GPU). I had accidentally installed the AMD flavor first (which is default) instead of the Nvidia one (since my computer only has a discrete Nvidia GPU and no AMD), which caused the game to not load and give unrelated errors. After resolving this, I have not observed any other issues.
I have not attempted multiplayer.
UI text is small, increasing the UI scale to 150% (max) helps - still small, but more bearable
XBox Live Sign In Does Not Work
XBox Live Sign in does not work - the window appears, and sign in works, but the final step (allow this app to access your account) cannot be passed - clicking "Yes" does nothing. The Live sign in window will pop up on every app launch once you try this. It can be closed using the window management function (steam button -> select the popup window at bottom of menu -> x to close), and disabled from the game settings -> uncheck "Automatic Xbox Live Login."
LAN Play Not Available
As others have mentioned, LAN play is greyed out.
I haven't tried multiplayer yet, but will update this report when I do.

It just crashes when starting a match
The mission editor loads, but crashes soon afterwards too.
Works well if you stay tabbed in with multiple monitors.
Sometimes the mouse gets stuck in corner with multiple Displays
Only LAN multiplayer doesn't work, the button is greyed out, other than that the game works without any issues

Game ran great using Proton 7.0-2. Didn't have to add any command parameters or configure anything.
Xbox Live sign in didn't work. There was a message at the bottom of the window that read, "UI Suppressed"
Lan Multiplayer does not work, the rest is working ok
Lan Multiplayer did not work
sometimes the connection closed, but it also happens on windows
did not work at all, the menu point was grayed out

install dxvk, vcrun_2017 using proton tricks
Graphics in game are choppy and laggy at 1920x1080 resolution at medium. Game consequently runs very slowly and doesn't feel responsive. This has been despite multiple attempts with different versions of proton, different command params on launch and some tinkering with Protontricks to try and iron this out.
either I've horribly missed something in my attempts to sort this, but I consider this unplayable.

J'ai du faire plusieurs manipulations avant d'avoir pu y jouer, notamment en mettant Proton 6 pour tous les jeux dans les paramètres SteamPlay. Après le redémarrage de Steam, le jeu marche.
Works great
The only issue I found was a crash when pressing left arrow when naming a save game. It was reproducible. Everything else works flawlessly.
Works great, however during online play I have too many crashes. I was not able to play LAN - maybe someone can share how to play LAN?
