Worked fine before the 1.0.4.100594 patch, now crashes at startup
I've tried different versions of proton (and proton-ge), I've tried all the launch options specified in this thread. Game crashes at startup. Game used to run fine with proton-ge and no special commandline tricks before the update on August 3 (1.0.4.100594) and now is a flaming pile of garbage ):
Easy Anti-Cheat = Easy Fail
Doesn't start up because of Easy Anti-Cheat.
I really wish that (a) people wouldn't cheat (unless everyone is cheating together to have fun and they all know about it) and (b) game devs would stop adding this shit - even if people cheat, that's a community thing to deal with. Anti-cheat -> never gonna work on WINE / Proton ): and they coulda had free Linux support.
There is a native version, but it has many lighting issues. Switch to Proton, use the old menu and have fun
6.15-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
6.115-GE-2 (Glorious EggRoll)
I played the native version for about 1/2 an hour but lighting issues were quite serious:
- certain shadowed areas are just full-on black
- my flashlight only worked under water
- some strange placement of shadows
I initially thought the issues would be no more than an inconvenience, but trying to shuffle around in dark air vents without a flashlight was a fail. Switched to Proton, took a fairly large framerate drop (250 -> 140) and had fun with friends.
If the game launches but you can't seem to do anything (there's a live map with a static camera), then you have hit the menu bug:
Be sure to use the old menu (launch options: %command% -oldgameui)
Works out of the box. First-time startup will take a while, whilst it runs DXSetup. Just be patient (:
Works well, and the game is beautiful and challenging.
If you get a black screen at exit, try switching to another VT and back (ie CTRL+ALT+F1, CTRL+ALT+F7)
Launched & played 2-player perfectly. Appeared to hang at exit, so I switched to another VT (ctrl+alt+F2), looked for the process with htop, didn't find it, switched back to X VT (ctrl+alt+F7) and the game had exited & everything was fine, so perhaps I was just impatient (:
Works well with Proton Experimental (and probably others). You must select OpenAL for the sound output and I recommend Vulkan for graphics.
You MUST select the OpenAL sound system from the in-game settings/sound menu, otherwise there will be no sound.
Minor stuttering at the start of the game (probably texture-caching), fine after; however I also switched from the DirectX11 graphics backend to Vulkan, in-game. This may have contributed to a smoother game.
If presented with the pop-up that your drivers are out of date, click cancel to continue.
Requires Steam Controller support. I had to fiddle a bit as I have two controllers and some games (like this one) only respond to the one that Steam thinks is primary.
some stuttering with motion blur set to full (default). Disabling motion blur seems to have resolved it - there was less stuttering (but still some) when I used GE-Proton7-24 with motion blur on
All-in-all, runs out the box, probably going to work fine for you if you have 1 controller (or use mouse/kbrd, tho the game recommends a controller, and it feels better to play with a controller). You must have Steam Controller support enabled (at least for this game, if not globally). Game runs quite smooth barring some stuttering on pan/rotate of view, which disappeared when I disabled motion blur altogether. Minor performance improvement using GE-Proton7-24, but the default (Proton 7) will work fine for most people, I think.
Doesn't even start up
Obviously something major has changed since the initial reviews.
I've tried:
- 5.0-10
- 6.3-6
- Experimental (as at 2021/08/31)
- 6.15-GE2
