Individual controls layout for my personal preferences.

Manual configuration via included setup utility is required for the game to fully work on Steam Deck! From the menu provided when launching the game from Steam, select:
.
Configuration > Ask each time
.
A setup dialogue window will pop up. Check the Video
part and set each option given to its value given (for all other options, keep presets or adjust to your liking):
Display Mode = 1280x800
For use with an external display, select prefered resolution from list. Workaround/troubleshooting: selectWindow
, run game, set (fullscreen) resolution in the in-game options.Allow Resolution Changes
◼Disabled (Uncheck)
Show Intro
◼Disabled (Uncheck)
You can always replay it from the game main menu.Use Direct3D
✔Enabled (Check)
Important! Else, no zoom (camera, map) in game!
.
Some text is very small. Most of it still legible. Use of Steam Deck system display zoom helps in many situations.
.
In-game UI shows very minor glitch (really thin horizontal line at the top of the UI) I soon did not notice it any more, being busy playing. :-) Other review said, there's a third party exe-file to overcome this (see moddb.com). Not worth the pain, imo.
.
For the game to work in fullscreen mode (with camera zoom still working), it must be configured accordingly. See above/below.
.
Using standard Proton (v8.0), I experienced corruption of save games a couple times. Switched to GE-Proton v8.23 - seems having solved the issue.
.
The game's camera/map zoom function is vital, esp. on small screens. For it to work, the game must be configured accordingly. See above/below for detail.
.
The settings recommended above are based on my personal experience. It's the setup that works best for myself.
Here some additional remarks on those settings:
Display Mode:
Changes to screen resolution made in the in-game options will be discarded on exiting the game app and revert to the value set in the setup utility.Display Mode:
Fullscreen resolution (i.e. 1280×800 for the internal display) is required here for the in-game zoom function to work! No zoom - no fun, really!!! Use "Display Mode = Window" for troubleshooting or as a fallback, only.Use Direct3D:
For the in-game zoom function to work, this must be enabled, additionally!Allow resolution changes:
When enabled, "Display Mode = Window" is mandatory for proper startup of the game (else black screen). Not recommended!Show Intro:
The size of the intro video depends on the selected screen resolution. Higher resolution > smaller video. Applies to the in-game video cutscenes as well. Not really a problem.- So, what's the deal with this setup? Well, there are substantial advantages (no need to download third party exe-file, zoom function working, fullscreen mode in-game) over very minor disadvantages (imho): Intro and cutscene videos do not scale to fullscreen, So there's a thick black border on all sides during playback; start screen (main menu) is not being scaled to fullscreen, too; in-game UI shows a very minor glitch (really thin horizontal line at the top of the UI) you soon will not notice any more, being busy playing. :-)
If you decide to really play this game, for convenience, will require to adjust Steam gamepad controls, based on the keys the game uses for controls.
Most texts are readable OK, though small. Some text might be hard to read. BUT: THE REAL PROBLEM HERE IS THAT EVERYTHING ELSE IS WAY TOO SMALL ON THE STEAMDECK BUILT-IN SCREEN! Even on max. zoom. Had to refund purchase for that reason.
Everything is too small on the Steam Deck built-in screen. I cannot play the game like it is.
Easy. Few settings, once. Be patient, while game is launching in DosBox.
Steam game properties: deactivate non-mandatory options (VR, cloud saves, ...), for now.
Steam controller setup: select profile "WASD + Mouse". Re-assign keys: Btn. (A) = Enter Btn. (B) = Escape Btn. (Y) = Space Btn. (X) = Backspace
Launch game. Starts pre-launcher app.
There, drop-down menu "Settings": select "Launch w. setup" for audio config. See mess. "SoundBlaster Pro 16 ASP detected". Confirm with Btn. (A). Next dialogue, confirm "No" (= don't use seperate audio cards) with Btn. (A). Next, confirm pre-selected "SB Pro 16 ASP". Next, confirm "Yes" and then again "Yes". Wait and conf. "OK".
Back in pre-launcher: drop-down menu "Fullscreen": sel. "Custom" for graphics config. Wait. Register "Basic ...: deactiv. opt. "Fullscreen". Reg. "Advanced ...": deactiv. opt. "Keep aspect ratio". Set "Window Resolution" = "1280 x 800". Save & exit.
Press "Play". Have fun! :-)
See in detailed tinkering descriptions (re-assign keys).
First time saving, game crashed to "desktop", once. Still save game successfull. Subsequent saving/loading with no problems.
Gaming mode, in pre-launcher: Buttons for documents ( Controls, Cluebook, Manual) won't work. Go to desktop mode > Bring up local files via Steam Client (right-click on game) > Find folder "Documentation" > Create symbolic link in folder "Deck/Downloads" or copy doc. folder to there.
Access the .pdf-docs in gaming mode through "Google Chrome" or (preferably) PDF- Viewer "Okular" (to be found in desktop mode in start menu / apps). Will require to add "Okular" or "Chrome" to Steam Client (try right-click on qpp-symbol > select entry "Add to Steam", if present. Else search web for directions).
Find "Okular" or "Chrome" in Steam Library. Start it (in"Okular", switch to fullscreen in menu "View"). Open your doc(s). Switch to library, start game. Switch back/forth between game and docs.
Audio might not work without proper configuration (as described below). Display might be in 4:3 format without proper configuration (as described below). Other than that, game should run with no tinkering, out of the box.
I can confirm: using the exact version of custom "Tkg" proton (i.e. Proton Tkg 7.6.r12.g51472395) will make this game work on Steam Deck!!!
After launching the game on Steam Deck (in gaming made) a configuration window will show up. Changing settings here requires use of "touch" or "system mouse" (i.e. hold left Steam key + use right touchpad to control mouse pointer / tap to klick LMB). Not sure if any setting at all needs to be changed for the game to run on Steam Deck.
Steps to go:
- Go into Desktop Mode of your Steam Deck.
- From the taskbar Iaunch app "Discover" (Software Center).
- Search for "ProtonUp-Qt" and install it. Wait to finish. Close "Discover" app window.
- On the Linux desktop find the shortcut/icon named "ProtonUp-Qt". Launch it.
- In "ProtonUp-Qt" find button "Add version" (see bottom of app window) and klick it.
- Now, select "Compatibility tool" from drop down list: Find item "Proton Tkg", select/klick it.
- Then, select "Version" from drop down list: Scroll down and find item "7.6.r12.g51472395", select/klick it.
- Klick button "Install" (see bottom of app window) and wait for the install process to start ... and finish.
- Close "ProtonUp-Qt" app window.
- From the desktop, return to the Gaming Mode of your Steam Deck.
- In the properties/settings for "GRANDIA HD Remaster" in section "Compatibility" check box to force use of a compatibility tool and select item "Proton-tkg 7.6.r12.g51472395.release".
Finally, launch GRANDIA. Enjoy! :-)
Just read my whole report here and do the required steps at the right time - and everything should be fine. Great game, b.t.w.!
[] Left Trackpad
[] As mousewheel ( to be able to scroll text inside text panels)
[] Back Grip Buttons
[] R5 = System: Toggle Zoom (for easier reading of texts of small font sizes.)

All texts are legible. But, without using the zoom function of the Steam Deck, your eyes might hurt over time. Mine did. So, I am using that zoom function (mapped to back grip button R5). Works OK for me.
Switching from Proton regular version to experimental resulted in loss of my save game and in-game settings (options)! So, make sure to switch to Proton experimental before starting the play the game for real!
At first, I used the regular current version of Proton (7.0-4) and the game regularly showed short lags during animations. That's why I switched to Proton experimental. Seems to fix that issue.
Out of the box, the game will be playable OK. But, the very little adaptions, as described above, are well worth the effort!
Must use the Steam Deck system zoom function to read some text easier.
Game tends to have small lags in mouse cursor movement and animations. Like processing is interrupted for a very short period. Still playable, but annoying. Quit and restart of the game seems to help, for some time, until it happens again.
Steam status "playable" on Steam Deck is NOT true! No tinkering means: game unplayable on the Deck!
Despite another review - For me, it was sufficient to go to Steam Desk desktop mode(!) and there, install "gdiplus_winxp" through "winetricks" from within "steamtinkerlaunch" (Proton compatibility tool) GUI. I think, "gdiplus" itself is not required.
steamtinkerlaunch: see here). See also "ProtonUp-Qt" (to install steamtinkerlaunch): here.
Beware: Be patient! May take a long time for steamtinkerlaunch to execute/finish installing winetricks items. May not happen, before you hit "Play" to launch the game in Steam Client. May need multiple attempts to succeed!
Do NOT try to install multiple winetricks items at once, from within "steamtinkerlaunch". And do NOT try to install them from within Steam Deck gaming mode. Might work, but gave me a HARD time, requiring to revert game installation and "steamtinkerlaunch" config to zero, manually, to be able to start over anew.
Compl. remap, to bring all keys to controls on Steam Deck gamepad.
But nothing illegible. Just very small. Required to use Steam Deck system zoom for convenience.
Without tinkering described: Incorrectly rendered text, partially illegible (settings screen). Then, unplayable due to text part. missing.
Without tinkering described: save game fails. Then, unplayable.
Could be and should be fixed by Steam or the game devs. I "pray". :-)
I tried a lot of things. In the end, it worked - not sure what made the difference.
Here are the two things, I suspect to have done the trick:
As others said, I worked my way through all different versions of Proton. Didn't work for me, at first.
Then I remembered, that some games require to be online when launched the first time (active internet + Steam client in online mode). So, I went online, launched the game (this time with latest standard Proton) ... and it worked! Afterwards, works offline now.
Game will always run windowed, in a maximized window - but not borderless.
Game has no "Quit" function. Must be exited via Steam button or by klicking the "X"-symbol in right upper corner of the window frame.
For what reason ever, the internal gamepad wouldn't work, when the game was launched with latest standard Proton (v8-0). Using "Proton Experimental" solved the issue.
At first, no audio at all. Fixed it using "Steam Tinkerlaunch" (game settings/properties > compatibility > force compatibility tool > Steam Tinker Launch). Steam Deck/Client has to be online for it to work!
If you don't already have it, Steam Tinkerlaunch is easily installed via "Proton Up Qt" (which can be installed in Desktop Mode via "Discover" Software Center).
