Tinkering notes: From the game setup menu, in graphical settings, disable full screen mode and use 720p resolution before launching games. No game external tinkering required. This is a GOLD game for functionality.
Easy. Few settings, once. Be patient, while game is launching in DosBox.
Steam game properties: deactivate non-mandatory options (VR, cloud saves, ...), for now.
Steam controller setup: select profile "WASD + Mouse". Re-assign keys: Btn. (A) = Enter Btn. (B) = Escape Btn. (Y) = Space Btn. (X) = Backspace
Launch game. Starts pre-launcher app.
There, drop-down menu "Settings": select "Launch w. setup" for audio config. See mess. "SoundBlaster Pro 16 ASP detected". Confirm with Btn. (A). Next dialogue, confirm "No" (= don't use seperate audio cards) with Btn. (A). Next, confirm pre-selected "SB Pro 16 ASP". Next, confirm "Yes" and then again "Yes". Wait and conf. "OK".
Back in pre-launcher: drop-down menu "Fullscreen": sel. "Custom" for graphics config. Wait. Register "Basic ...: deactiv. opt. "Fullscreen". Reg. "Advanced ...": deactiv. opt. "Keep aspect ratio". Set "Window Resolution" = "1280 x 800". Save & exit.
Press "Play". Have fun! :-)

First time saving, game crashed to "desktop", once. Still save game successfull. Subsequent saving/loading with no problems.
Gaming mode, in pre-launcher: Buttons for documents ( Controls, Cluebook, Manual) won't work. Go to desktop mode > Bring up local files via Steam Client (right-click on game) > Find folder "Documentation" > Create symbolic link in folder "Deck/Downloads" or copy doc. folder to there.
Access the .pdf-docs in gaming mode through "Google Chrome" or (preferably) PDF- Viewer "Okular" (to be found in desktop mode in start menu / apps). Will require to add "Okular" or "Chrome" to Steam Client (try right-click on qpp-symbol > select entry "Add to Steam", if present. Else search web for directions).
Find "Okular" or "Chrome" in Steam Library. Start it (in"Okular", switch to fullscreen in menu "View"). Open your doc(s). Switch to library, start game. Switch back/forth between game and docs.
Audio might not work without proper configuration (as described below). Display might be in 4:3 format without proper configuration (as described below). Other than that, game should run with no tinkering, out of the box.
