Without mediafoundation the cutscenes & videos don't play which makes the game literally impossible to play through. Animations don't work correctly and you enter into zones where you regularly wouldn't be able to so textures will be missing. You must install mediafoundation in order to play the game.
Tried a couple solutions posted here, the last one worked so I created a shell script for everyone else.
6.2-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Downloaded dll files, installed mediafoundation and forced Proton-6.1-GE-2. Further explanation is in the comment blocks of the shell script I created: catherineClassic.fix.sh
Some of the videos still play a little sluggish.
I tried to explain things as well as I could in the script's comments. I wanted to make it as easy to use for Linux users of any experience level. I hope it helps! Link to the shell script
Only an hour in but the game runs great so far, steady 60 FPS. Haven't seen any noticeable frame drops.
Changing video setting to borderless fullscreen fixes the alt-tab black screen problem.
In the menus, the mouse cursor is sluggish.
Elite Dangerous plays great from Linux without doing anything, I force proton experimental with all games just so I'm always using the newest version with the latest updates.
It runs perfect out of the box for me.
I'm not sure if it's my graphics driver or something else but my game runs perfect out of the box. I didn't change any of the steam play compatibility options. So if you're having trouble then try turning off any compatibility tools, update your graphics driver and try again, I hope it'll work for you like it does for me.
So this game is supposed to run natively without proton/wine...but when Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth doesn't launch or crashes almost instantaneously when launching from Steam, try this: (it worked for me)
- Download libtbb.so.2
- Place libtbb.so.2 into the Beyond Earth folder
- Set launch options: LD_PRELOAD='./libtbb.so.2'
I hope that helps someone, have fun!
Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
First of all I had no idea what to do just based off other people posting here beyond googling for Media Foundation DLL. So I'll try to explain it a little more in detail...
Go to https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases and download Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF.tar.gz (the newest 5.9 didn't work so it has to be this version.) After you have downloaded that, extract it. Then copy & paste the "Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF" directory to "~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/" (if compatibilitytools.d directory doesn't exist, then create it! I had to do create it...)
After that, restart steam. Go into your steam library and right click WARSAW > Properties and enable "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" and select "Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF" and that's it! Now enjoy playing WARSAW!
