Except the tiny adjustment (which should really be fixed by the dev), it runs really great!
To get the native Linux version working and fixing the black screen (only music and cursor), edit the file: "~/.config/unity3d/Ludic/Akane/prefs" and on line 4, set value of "Screenmanager Resolution Use Native" from 0 to 1.
Needed to downgrade from 3.16-5 beta to 3.16-4 because with -5 beta, the Punkbuster and DirectX installation dialogs were not shown. Otherwise great!
What works
- Installation
- Sound
What does not
- There is no video
- The game is unplayable
Just like the WineHQ entry says: https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=8791
(To install, simply go to steam://install/92 in your browser and it will prompt you to open the link with Steam.)
Try to start the game once to have its compatdata folder set up.
Then via terminal run winecfg and set the Windows version to Windows 10:
WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1305720/pfx winecfg
And run this command to fix the shader compile error (need to install protontricks if you don’t have it yet):
protontricks 1305720 d3dcompiler_47
Doesn’t seem to work natively and neither with any of the Proton versions (3.16-4, 3.7-8, etc.)
Used same ucrtbase.dll as friend on Windows as per https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/11dftq1/fix_halo_mcc_coop_between_windows_and_linuxsteam/
Unfortunately, the Coop campaigns crash every time after a few seconds when playing on Steam Deck with a friend who is on Windows. Tried a lot of things: Halo 1, Halo 3, even a custom workshop mission, with and without Anticheat, with default Proton as well as Proton-GE, and even with the recommended fix to use the same ucrtbase.dll -- nothing works.
The coop campaign works now with friends on Windows! Do NOT use the ucrtbase.dll fix, simply use GE-Proton9-5 (or possibly newer). Tried with some missions of Halo 2 and 3 and it worked without any disconnects.
Mildest tinkering needed for the coop campaign to use GE-Proton9-5, then it’s flawless.
Everything works absolutely fine! Even on my non-gaming laptop a full playthrough was nicely possible. (But depending on setup you should reduce the resolution.)
The game seems to work nicely, but cutscenes do not seem to play. Only a black screen is shown and you can skip with Space.
Didn’t start with 3.16-7 Beta, but with 3.16-4 it worked nicely.
Except the described 2--3 random crashes over the ~15 hours of playtime, nothing was off.
2 or 3 crashes in my ~15 hours of playtime.
The mouse sensitivity was very strange (way too much even after adjustment down to ~0.2), and the mouse movement has some delay which makes it rather unplayable. Not sure if it’s due to my laptop setup, but this even happened with the lowest resolution setting -- and other games like Half-Life 2 and CS:GO work without issues.
Linux build (which is used automatically although not shown) does not trigger achievements -- with Proton they work

Game and cutscenes all work nicely! Hint with Alt+Enter for fullscreen is great! If you do that right before or after the "The DIG" title shows during the intro (ca. 1 minute in) when the screen is black, no remnants will show on the side. You can then also safely Alt+Tab out and back in. Bring up the settings dialog (with Save & Load as well) with Ctrl+F1. (In case you can not type anything in the save dialog, you unfortunately need to Alt+Enter out of fullscreen again.)
Full playthrough with 2 players (keyboard only, controllers not tested). Worked flawlessly even on non-gaming laptop.
Needed to downgrade to Proton 3.7, and used the launch option with "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%" to even get it to start. With 3.16 Steam did not show the first run dialog where it installs DirectX stuff.

Same here, it’s not fullscreen and quite small. It’s better when you reduce your computer resolution, but on my laptop the lowest was not enough.
Seems to need 640x480 as per the Windows-only tip at https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=207020995
