I had to follow 'ngoomie's instructions below, specifically:
- Install something that depends on the erronous library:
pacman -S gperftools
- Locate the game's install folder:
cd /home/<user>/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Aperture Desk Job/game/bin/linuxsteamrt64
- Rename (or delete) the library: 'mv libtcmalloc_minimal.so.0 libtcmalloc_minimal.so.0.bak`
- Link tothe newly installed library:
ln -s /usr/lib/libtcmalloc_minimal.so ./libtcmalloc_minimal.so.0
That's it! I was able to complete the game no problem after that.
Did not start in fullscreen - the option "Use Native Resolution" sorthed this.
Controller will move two menu entries at once - keyboard dind't do this. Menuing isn't required for the main game.
Also tested Proton performance: Performance was worse than the native build, with hitches occuring every now-and-then. No hitching on the native build. The game crashed after around 5 minutes.
2160p, 144Hz & VRR worked flawlessly out-of-the-box. HDR support did not work.
Tested on Xorg & Wayland. This game respects the Xwayland primary monitor set through xrandr
. VRR not tested on Xorg.
Worked great out-of-the-box on Wayland.
Audo worked well. Only issue was no DPI scaling at 4K made the GUI very small - 1080p works fine instead.
2160p, 144Hz & VRR worked flawlessly out-of-the-box.
This game didn't utilise Xwayland's primary display (set through xrandr
).
Tested on Wayland. Had to install gamescope and use gamescope -f -e %command%
to run on the correct screen. Otherwise, no issues.
Runs great on Wayland Arch!
Overall great experience with Proton on such an early build. Getting into the game took a few attempts, though this was in part due to an unstable internet connection. My steps were:
- Wait for a 5-minute island in internet stability!
- Launch the game from Steam, which will bring you to a secondary store / launcher.
- If the store shows a message "Missing games from your library? ...", close and re-launch the game.
- Create an account, or skip account creation. (I skipped without any repercussions.)
- You should now be at a "Launch" screen, with the text "Installed from Steam". If not, close and re-launch a few more times.
- Lunch!
- First launch will require EULA confirmation - the window started minimised and I had to alt-tab over to it.
- ???
- Into space.
Some notes from playing around for a bit:
- I found that alt-tabbing is mostly stable - sometimes you don't get your controls back and need to re-alt-tab; but alt-tabbing is yet to cause a crash or other game-breaking scenario.
- The first time I reached the orbital screen and clicked through the tutorial dialog, the interface glitched out - planets were zoomed incorrectly and my controls were unable to control the camera. Clicking to a different interface and back solved this and it has not happened since.
- 1080p looked much more fuzzy than 2160p, where other games tend to do a good job of integer upscaling and crisping up the text.
- Graphics can look a little grainy or fuzzy sometimes - this is separate to the resolution point above. I'm assuming this is just some early-access textures & filters and will see improvements over time.
Game crashes immediately when beginning to drill something.
Text was pixelated and almost illegible. Changing the graphics settings to Exclusive Fullscreen solved this.
Game crashes immediately when beginning to drill something. Spooling the drill in air does not cause a crash.
Use Proton version to avoid crashing.

Native version is currently borked on Steam Deck.
2880x2160 (4:3), 60Hz, as per Windows. Worked great out-of-the-box.
Tested on Wayland - no issues whatsoever.
Runs great on Wayland Linux!
Gamepad was recognised, but "A" and "B" buttons were not recognised. Required setting "Controls" to "Gamepad" in the launcher. If this setting doesn't appear, I've confirmed that the following config mod also works:
~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/290300/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/my games/double damage games/rebelgalaxy/local_settings.txt:
<INTEGER>GAMEPAD:1
Attempted to force a suitable resolution, but this did not take hold.
No way to set resolution. Default resolution tried & failed to span multiple monitors. Holdding 'alt' at startup didn't display a launch menu.
Tested on Wayland.
Native build does not play nicely with multi-monitor. Force Proton - the game will use your primary monitor and the launch menu will appear, allowing you to set resolution options.
Worked great & low power draw. Some effort needed with the control scheme, but I've published my layout in case it works for others.
Two radial menus bound to left-stick. Other rebinds. Have published a community layout.
2160p and 144Hz worked flawlessly out-of-the-box. Framerate didn't dip, so no idea about VRR.
Starts to a blank screen and requires clicking to continue loading. If left alone, the game will crash after around 10 seconds.
Tested on Wayland - runs on Xwayland. This game respects the Xwayland primary monitor set through xrandr
.
gamemoderun %command%
- Deleted directory ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/552500.
- Verified integrity of game files.
- Selected Properties -> Betas -> "temporary_launcher_workaround - Bypass Launcher Beta".
- Ran the game, selccting the "Bypass Launcher (dx12)" option.
I'm not sure if the steps 1-2 are still necessary, but they don't take too long! If the above doesn't work, I tried switching to GE-7.31, but was able to switch back to the default after the first successful launch. I'll re-post once I've tested out the multiplayer.
EAC initially prevented launching the game. The above steps resolved this for me.
Assuming said gamer wants to play multiplayer - single-player may well be a great experience.
As many have commented, EAC makes getting into the game is a challenge and playing with friends an even greater one.
- Required opting in to the "temporary_launcher_workaround" beta to get to the main menu.
- Was unable to get into a multiplayer game in any way, despite trying all of the fixes, hacks, hosting & joining methods I could find.
