Runs good enough, expect ~30-40 FPS
By default the game uses FSR 1 quality, would recommend changing to FSR 2 for significantly sharper visuals and very little performance impact.
Frame drops in some areas near the beginning of the game.
Poor performance
Push-to-talk has to be mapped to a key instead of a controller input.
Game struggles to reach 30 FPS, frequent drops to 20 FPS and below.
The game seems to be simply too much for the steam deck despite a dedicated graphics preset. Can be played at lower difficulties, not particularly fun. The latest update with the addition of maps with settlements is particularly hard on the deck.
gamescope --force-grab-cursor --sharpness 0 -w 1920 -h 1080 -F fsr -f -- %command% --use-d3d11
Was able to get the game to run okay, though it did seem to have worse performance than windows.
The game seems to run significantly worse on my 6650XT than what I'm seeing on Windows (granted I haven't personally ran it on Windows), I have to run the game at low settings 1080p and even then struggle to consistently reach 60 FPS.
Capping the framerate to 30 fps can be helpful for battery.
Runs well, some frame drops
Some frame drops when moving around open areas, particularly while mounted.
Some SteamOS crashes while playing, unclear what the cause is but they were very infrequent.
No Man's Sky can be pretty demanding on lower-end hardware, but looks and runs good so long as you have a system that meets the minimum requirements through any version of Proton
The game is playable, but has a significant amount of missing models running through proton making it difficult to play.
gamescope -w 1920 -h 1080 -f -F fsr --force-grab-cursor --sharpness 0 -- force_vk_vendor=-1 %command% -windowed -dx11
Missing textures and models, made game difficult to play since you can't see rocks or poles in many areas while driving
Will not launch in fullscreen, must be launched windowed. Luckily this can be fixed with gamescope but a bit annoying.
Does not grab mouse by default (at least in gamescope windowed)
Still playable, though the game did not run well at very high settings (unclear if that's a proton issue or a game issue since friends on windows had similar performance issues)
It can work with tweaks, but overall would not recommend playing from linux unless you're prepared for the jank.
The game's networking kinda sucks but this is unrelated to proton/linux.
If you want to use multiplayer, you must use proton and run the windows version of the game to play with friends running windows, there is no crossplay.
Overall, the game is technically playable, but the frame drops, stuttering, and poor performance really make the game a bad experience
The game was unplayable bad above Low settings, and outdoor maps frequently dropped below 30 fps
When joining servers, I would be occasionally kicked for client behavior
Performance in multiplayer is truly awful, particularly in larger maps, and I couldn't maintain a solid 60 fps regardless of my settings
Runs great, requires touchscreen/mouse input sometimes
Despite being steam deck verified, does require mouse/touchscreen input for some parts of the game, e.g. using the ticket machine.
