Used configuration from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjh01ZyP078 (game's user.cfg).
For protontricks, installed the Origin launcher instead of the EA App (see https://github.com/p0358/Fuck_off_EA_App) and had to update PunkBuster manually (see https://evenbalance.com/pbsetup.php; download PunkBuster Windows version). Origin sucks less than EA app. PunkBuster update is also required on Windows.
Problems mentioned previously are cross-platform because it's an EA game --- what did you expect?
Aside from PunkBuster update, which is a cross-platform issue, multiplayer mode on Linux works flawlessly.

Windows Media Player 11 (wmp11) or a prior version needs to be installed for cutscenes to play. However, this is handled automatically by Proton-GE, so no manual fix needed. (See https://github.com/Open-Wine-Components/umu-protonfixes/tree/master/gamefixes-steam/204450.py.)
Windows Media Player is required for cutscenes to function properly (both video and audio).
Cross-platform information: add the "-nologos" launch option to skip the introduction videos. Also see the PCGamingWiki for further tweaks.

When playing in fullscreen, graphics quality is lowered. This is a cross-platform issue, and it's caused by the fact that the game has low-resolution sprites only.
Slowness when selecting plants cards before a new level starts.
To fix the slowness: while the game is running, copy the .exe from "steamapps/compatdata/3590/pfx/drive_c/ProgramData/PopCap Games/PlantsVsZombies/" to "steamapps/common/Plants Vs Zombies/"; then, close the game, delete the "PlantsVsZombies.exe" from the game installation folder and rename the copied .exe from ProgramData to "PlantsVsZombies.exe" (the same name as the original .exe).
I recommend playing in windowed mode to get the most of the graphics quality. Also make sure to have 3D acceleration enabled in the game's options.

I'm writing this additional report to inform people that the Steam Achievements still work and unlock normally after replacing the EXE as previously mentioned.

Game has an unique style on a 3v4 match where stealth is key to win. Hide from the killers!

Sometimes audio does not work at all or half of the audio is muted randomly. This is a cross-platform issue.
Game has issues with LODs. Higher texture models take a while to load. This is a cross-platform issue.

Multiplayer works properly. There are some issues related to hit registration, but that is the developers' fault for bad server-side code. Overall, it feels great.
Even though I have many points of criticism to the game, most of them are cross-platform and have nothing to do with Linux. Be sure to use the "-dx11" launch option to avoid "Out of video memory" error (this error also happens on Windows on powerful hardware).

Installed Windows Media Player 11 (wmp11), then ran "RegVideoDLL.exe" from the game folder (using Wine shell from protontricks) to be able to see movies (cutscenes).
Don't use Fullscreen from the Launcher options. Causes problems with Alt+Tab. Untick it to use windowed mode.
Use https://github.com/ermaccer/Worms4UHD.MouseFix to fix mouse issues.
Use https://github.com/heatray/WUMPatch to fix many game bugs and add new features. Also allows for borderless fullscreen mode, and removes some bad post-processing effects.
Works normally. Multiplayer has some delay, but that's because it's P2P. This problem is not exclusive to Linux/Proton.
