Shocking News: Useless anticheat claims another victim
Does not work under any conditions anymore, avoid.

Anticheat broke compatability completely
Broken by anti cheat being added

You can download it, install it, and sign in to your EA account. You cannot play it due to issues with Wine. The other reports about Kernel level anti-cheat seem accurate.

Despite all this, if you're on a Deck or just want to play offline, you'll have a lot of fun!

Using the patches from https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/126a_sYhGp5uppsalqfkGV_RSEH-bPm4O , you can see the game launches with changes applied, though offline. Here's some gameplay and examples of missing things https://youtu.be/UirZ3GKCfiU?si=yqy-2MpezuR7RIcT
Anything that needs online will not work and matches need to be loaded from the pause menu.
All instructions are in the Drive link above. A lot is missing from the game that would need online, including: Interactions with anything in the backyard, including the flag of power Spawning plants or zombies, including pots and bots Returning the taco in capture the taco XP/rank progression: everything is at Level 1, with no XP earned and always at rank 5k There's probably some more, but that's all I can find. This is entirely offline and doesn't connect to EA servers.
EA ruined it as usual

Doesn't load
Wine not supported error
Crashes after 30s, nothing loads.

Sale "Wine is not supported!", no se puede iniciar
Gracias EA

New anticheat breaks the game
Launches with error "Wine is not supported!"

Could launch a small window which let me log into my EA account, but not the actual game. Must be because of the anti-cheat.
I submitted a ticket, despite knowing that they'll be unhelpful. Best we can do is make the suits aware that we're out there, so if you're also upset about this, I suggest you also try to contact EA. Together we can do this!

"Wine is not supported!"
Thanks EA.

EA is bad >:(
The EA launcher works, when the game launches it says "Wine is not supported!" in a little error window. It also says "The program encountered E111000B at 00001D9B during initialization." Not sure what that means but the game would probably work if EA supported wine.

Game does not work due to anti-cheat
EA added their proprietary anti-cheat to this game, which has no Linux support.
"[...] Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 will not run on the native Steam OS for Steamdeck with this update."

Wine is not supported.
Anticheat borked it completely. ;(

Anti-cheat broke it
Just opens a window saying "Wine is not supported". game wont launch at all

EA f*ked up

ANTI CHEAT!!!
As everyone knows this game was just running absolutely rampant with cheaters and standard forms of anti cheat would not suffice! Therefore, EA graciously saved this game from certain doom by implementing their own proprietary and kernel-level anti-cheat (THANK YOU EA)!!! I LOVE EA AND THEY MAKE REALLY GOOD CONSUMER-FRIENDLY DECISIONS!!!! (sarcasm)

anti cheat introduced breaks game

anti cheat says wine is not supported and game wont launch
game no longer works due to new kernel-level anticheat that intentionally blocks wine / proton

As always, they added an anticheat that doesn't support linux and do not allow me to play this game anymore... what a shame this studio is

No Longer Playable - EA Implemented a Kernel Level Anti-Cheat Breaking Wine/Proton Compatibility
This game isn't playable on Linux anymore due to EA implementing a kernel level anti-cheat breaking Wine/Proton compatibility.

EA Anti-Cheat blocks Linux/Proton and Steam Deck support.
This game no longer works due to kernel level anti-cheat.

It launches fine, and it get's to the point where you can log in with origin (or whatever it is) but once it launches the actual game the new anti cheat EA added doesn't allow wine to run the game.

Welp, this game used to be playable - at least if you were able to avoid running into cheaters, but now it's just completely unplayable thanks to EA adding their fancy anti-cheat system but forgetting about Linux, classic.
Surely EA will fix this, like R6 Siege support for Steam Deck, right guys? 🫠

They added EA Anticheat to counter skids exploiting and banning everyone and it didn't even work. Good job EA.
This isn't a huge loss because the game was unplayable online due to skids being able to ban anyone they were in a lobby with anyway. The game was unplayable before and after the anticheat was added.

Worked until recently
Startup just opens a "Wine is not supported" Error-Message and closing it quits the Game.

EA recently added windows-only anti-cheat
the game is borked for the time being

They've added a kernal level anti-cheat in this update that completely breaks the game.

They screwed it up completely by adding the anti-cheat, before it worked perfect.
They screwed it up completely by adding the anti-cheat, before it worked perfect.

EA is adding kernel-level anticheat to this game pretty soon, which will make unfortunately make it unplayable on GNU/Linux systems.
Don't bother.

I was able to play the single and multiplayer modes using Proton Experimental (2023/02/07).
The game is currently working fine, but I assume it will stop working after the EA Anticheat update that should arrive now in 2024

I followed the tutorial from the user ToastD Tech on YouTube to be able to start it on the steam deck, this video temporarily solved the problem since the next day I started the game but when it had to appear on the game screen it closed, I tried to remove the file and remove the proton option and nothing, I couldn't reproduce it and came here to see if anyone has the solution or the same problem as me.

Unexpected small fps drops, but still perfectly playable
It might have some problems installing the EA App at first, but it should work great otherwise
no problems at all. platinium
All works great :D
No issues, no extra tinkering required. If it doesnt work with Stock Proton, get ProtonUp-QT and use that to easily download Proton GE with a GUI

In the starting cutscenes there was a moment, when some elements visibly took a fraction of second to load after displaying the scene, so that might be slower. Happened just once though.
Besides of games own inability to find players for a match, it just worked.
Turned all of the settings to highest possible and performance was solid, it seems with GPU's coils playing melodies of triumph. Did not use Mangohud, so did not have any insight about what the actual framerate was considering all mentioned before.

It's an absolute blast. It's the finest example of what happen when Vulkan API perfectly translate the Microsoft DirectX via window or full screen operations, independently from the game development age itself, because developers were enough flexible to leave the door politely open.
Enjoy this awesomeness on your openSUSE Linux system.
Tested on EA Origin via Lutris (lutris-7.2-2 x86_x64 wine bottle).
