I had some problems with crashes in the beginning (without tinkering), but then I started using this launch option and I've been playing for many many hours since, not a single crash, and performance is what i expect from my hardware.
AMD_VULKAN_ICD=RADV VK_DRIVER_FILES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/radeon_icd.x86_64.json %command%
Without the mentioned steps I had graphical glitches (3d artifacts, invisible roads, etc) that made the game unplayable. Using the RADV driver solves all these problems.
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 RADV_PERFTEST=rt gamemoderun %command% +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +com_skipKeyPressOnLoadScreens 1
The game's "Borderless Window" option mode has a huge impact on FPS for me (Plasma). Stay on fullscreen or use a workaround.
Unbearable mouse input lag, PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1
fixed this for me
About 130fps, 1440p, Ultra Nightmare settings with Raytracing.
Using the game's FSR implementation caused FPS problems for me. I've always had great results with the Glorious Eggroll fork so that's what I've used instead, and with the launch parameter
WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 %command%
I get a much better result both visually and performance-wise.
Great experience on the Deck.
At the time of testing, the multiplayer servers had "technical difficulties". I played online on another Linux PC before though, so in theory it should work on the Deck as well.
I suggest playing around with the ingame graphics settings to make it look a bit nicer. Battery performance is not bad even on high settings.
How can a 10 years old game run that poorly?
Severe FPS drops and stuttering/freezing
Last time I checked this game ran perfectly fine, but now it's a stuttery mess with bad stuttering and input lag. Maybe it's the AMD drivers, maybe it's the kernel, maybe Rockstar borked something, I don't know.
gamemoderun DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command%
Having Ingame's vsync enabled gave me very poor performance and somehow it was only applied after I restarted the game.
Runs great on Linux out of the box.
The launcher won't let me log in. I wouldn't count that as a "significant bug" though. Everything else works as expected.
A typical gamer will most likely enjoy this on Linux, performance is subjectively better than on Windows - stutters only start appearing for me around busy airports and big cities, but in more rural areas I didn't experience any stuttering or input lag. My joystick (an old Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas) was recognized correctly and worked reliably.
However, I was not able to get third party apps to detect or interact with the Sim. Also, the built-in multiplayer does not work and I haven't noticed any AI traffic during testing. For some people, this might be a dealbreaker - but if all you want to do is fly around and explore the world, then it's perfectly fine.
With the lack of satellite imagery, the whole appeal of Microsoft Flight simulator is gone.
-FastLaunch
Since recently, satellite imagery does not load anymore.
Mouse cursor is offset in full screen - running the simulator in windowed mode is a workaround.
Connection to multiplayer servers cannot be established (server selection only shows "automatic" and never connects to anything).
Used to work perfectly, now it doesn't start anymore
Launcher opens, but game launches to a black screen and then crashes after about a minute. Sending a crash report is pointless since all its entries are just zeroes. What a shame, it used to run really nicely before the last update.
Followed this guide to make EasyAnticheat work: https://squadfm.org/#installation-linux-only
Modified network settings
The first few seconds on any freshly loaded map often stutter a lot. Usually resolves itself quickly.
The Ubisoft launcher refused to connect (it was stuck on "Initializing" and never connected). The way I resolved this was to set the MTU of my network connection to 1452 Bytes (as proposed by someone in this reddit comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/Lutris/comments/10a3msr/comment/j46vui3/ ). This works for the Steam version as well, not just Lutris.
It runs. Could be better, but it is perfectly playable after I got it to connect. It looks like at least 60fps to me, there's no input lag, so I'm happy. Multiplayer also works as expected.
Runs great out of the box. Previous progress has carried over to the Deck thanks to cloud saves. Runs very smooth, overlay says it's locked at 60fps even with a lot of stuff happening on the screen (although there are slowdowns at later stages of a run, those are somewhat noticeable but do not affect the gamplay at all, it's a very smooth experience overall)
Power consumption according to overlay, without any adjustments (dairy plant, with focus on sparkly AoE weapons):
main menu: ~8W
early game: ~9W
endgame (20+ minutes): ~15W
Runs very well out of the box, no problems whatsoever.
Runs great, aside from minor and rare issues with the UI.
A few menus are just empty or glitchy - most notably news messages and the factions tab, in my case.
