You can play the game, but do not expect a consistent fps especially in the open world. Crashes will occur, and even with a DLSS mod.
If you use the right trackpad for mouse support ( to move the camera), it's not great as the owl menu automatically opens in a few seconds. I have unbinded all key binds to no avail
The game crashes quite frequently regardless of the proton i used. Especially towards the end of the game.
If you want to play the game, do not play so via the deck.

The game used to work [Heroic Launcher -> Epic Games], but somehow stopped with recent updates and will not start at all

working great with Ascendio Portable and CryoUtilities. The game is smoother and the battery lasts much longer
CryoUtilities + Ascendio Mod
Sometimes games not launch. if you want to fix it just press steam button on your steam deck

Game runs great however experience is not great on Steam Deck due to hardware limitations.
You need to have FSR enabled on such a low resolution in order for this game to be playable, even then FPS is stable enough to be enjoyable. You can play this game from start to finish on the Steam Deck however I personally am not going to. Visually this game offers a great experience and input delay is important in this game.

It's just plug and play! For such a AAA title which has so many issues on my pc with a 4090 ... love to play this on the small screen!

Used a program to set up the graphics to look decent and makes the game run smoothly https://www.nexusmods.com/hogwartslegacy/mods/1805
When using the Ascendio Portable program, first run the game to set up the proton prefix. Then load up the program in desktop mode. You only need to run it once, unless the prefix is deleted. Game will run more smooth than vanilla and runs decently using the mod.

Set the frame limit in game to unlimited and set 30fps limit in performance menu
![](https://avatars.steamstatic.com/06362f4d69c8b8118c24899715c49eb600b7bb3f_full.jpg)
Do next optimizing before run the game:
-Set UMA Frame Buffer size to 4G in BIOS
-Set swap file size to 16G
(Use CryoUtilities to do it automatically is recommanded.)
(By some reports, the game may frame lag more if you don't set it up.)
Game setting:
-Follow recommanded setting. (All in midium.)
-Upscaling: FSR 2 Quality. (Play with no upscaling is playable but it will drop frame in more scene.)
-FPS limit: 30fps.
Steam deck setting:
-FPS limit: 30fps.
Performance:
-Whole console consumption: 10w(indoor) - 25w(outdoor).
-FPS: 30fps indoor, stable. 25-30fps outdoor.
It should be the best setting in terms of graphics and framerate tradeoffs probability.
The game is clearly not optimised for SteamDeck, and requires graphical settings to be set to very low to be playable

TDP Limit & Gaphics: Low

Some Stuttering
Great Game, Great Play

It installs without issues, launches without issues, and runs pretty great on the deck from what I've played.
Changed settings to all low with the exception of texture quality set to medium. FSR 2.0 on quality with sharpening at 0.3.
In some cutscenes and in the gear menu my character would flicker. This started after I change the texture quality to medium mid game so a restart might fix it. The VRAM usage only peaked at around 4gb so it shouldn't be a VRAM issue.
This only happened one time so far, but once during combat the game turned into a sideshow for seemingly no reason. Prior to the huge drop it was a solid 35-40fps during the encounter.
I also ran this using cryoutilities on both Steam OS 3.4 and 3.5 and both ran about the same, I think.
![](https://avatars.steamstatic.com/d5548698e68aee465475cfe7ddd397d6b0cfd4db_full.jpg)
The game ran perfectly with no tweaks, using Steam OS 3.4.
![](https://avatars.steamstatic.com/9a5d0c880e66b595d8809248af0bab2ca070df38_full.jpg)
This games run beautifully on medium. Getting a SOLID 30-40 FPS in the open world, and was getting consistent 60 running through hogwarts and smaller areas/dungeons.
I am currently using Steam OS 3.5 via the preview channel.

Change upscale to TSR trough Engine.ini
Low settings
Run out-of-the-box. However, you need upscale option enable to get 30 fps constant. FSR 2 or XeSS are badly implant and image quality present lot of goshtling. Enabeling TSR trough Engine.ini make the quality much higher while enabling 30 fps. I had to create the file in desktop mode. Some tuto can be found here : https://www.reddit.com/r/HarryPotterGame/comments/11295jr/is_taa_high_just_unreal_engines_temporal_super/?rdt=41779
![](https://avatars.steamstatic.com/3f47c3634c822270cbccf23f4cb4fcf2272e23d1_full.jpg)
Changed right trackpad to mouse (for menus). Set L4 to shield; R4 to roll; L5 to the spell to show things; R5 to heal potions;
I don't know why when the Deck reaches <30% battery it stutters like crazy. It's not a problem if you play always connected.
Set everything to medium and activate FSR2. It plays great.
5th May 2023 Patch made it playable without tinkering. Completely run great out of the box.
Update the game, no need any other tinkering. The game runs great at stable 30 FPS (FSR2.0 quality, turn on all 4 effects, medium setting).
Add ascendio mod in engine.ini
without GE-Proton, sometimes the game freeze and need to force quiting.

If you are facing the "ChromaSDKPlugin failed to load" problem like me, follow the guide in https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Hogwarts_Legacy to replace chroma plugin should fix it.
low settings on graphics still look exceptional on Steamdeck. Even at 30 fps i still, it plays nicely.
With framerates locked to 30, you'll have moments where it dips into mid 20s. It depedns on what area of the map.
If you like to tinkering, you can probably squeeze out some good performance out this. With Cyro Ultilizies and other optimizations. Or if you're the type that just wants to boot and play, it plays well enough where you'll certainly be satified on low settings 30 fps. Low settings in this is probably more comparable to high settings from 10 years ago. Looks good.
Removed Volumetric Fog in engine.ini
I locked the game at 30 FPS.
You need to change the UMA Buffer to 256 MB in the bios (https://www.youtube.com/shorts/8PKHha2CjqI)
I recommend following the video from Pixel Deck. (https://youtu.be/ZGykX_HHtnA)
Removed Volumetric Fog in engine.ini
Missing and flickering textures at times
No vibration
Stuttering at points
30fps cap with fsr 2.0 balanced and all low I'm getting a constant 30fps with stutter due to bad optimisation
I've had about 5 crashes in 10 hours of gameplay and sometimes textures are missing or flickering
Fun game and despite what I've listed you can still enjoy the game just with slight hiccups
add back buttons for easy press for "revelio" spell, field guide guidance, map, and toggle run/walk
I exclusively play on Deck (as I do not own a PC) and this runs great! I found fiddling with the in-game settings to be a mix of Medium and Low gives me the better looking graphics and performance, with a good amount of time despite the added battery drain. I did remove the "fog" from the game as I found it made everything look muddy and hard to see, (I know it's supposed to be there but I'm old, can't help my bad eyes) and ran CryoUtitlies to recommeded settings.
GE-Proton7-49
at it's current state, its unenjoyable on steam deck with all the stuttering and frame drops, even running on low graphics its still so slow. comparing this to arkham knight and witcher 3, the experience playing hogwarts is not satisfying. how are those games much more seamless and plays exceptionally well even on higher graphics.
![](https://avatars.steamstatic.com/5076cb4b31180b9fb9b6520693e7906f4c89b8ba_full.jpg)
Any short dips in performance are the game's fault and happen equally on Windows, even on more powerful hardware. The dips are nothing major and the game works fine otherwise.
![](https://avatars.steamstatic.com/5fbcd266b35ce3f9906d0f302c278885931d8878_full.jpg)
Unfixable stutter, but no more than on Windows.
Runs fine on Proton. However, a patch is desparately needed. No matter where you run it, the current version has framerate drops, as well as camera hitches. There is random stutter everywhere, seemingly related to VRAM issues. Frame stability is nowhere to be found.
NB: Does not run on Intel Arc! Crashes after startup warning, at which point on Windows the shader compilation would normally start.
After sleep external controllers dont work anymore and the game needs to be restarted.
Settings -> Lowest + Medium Textures, Uncapped Framerate, capped to 30fps via the Steam Menu, FSR Balanced
It doesn't even compile shaders on Steam Deck so it loads instantly, I played it in desktop, handheld and docked and always had a good time.

Everything is running well on 40 fps, sometimes 50-60 fps gained (on Hogwarts especially).
using TDP 12 watt, CPU to 1000
modify Engine.ini and GameUserSettings.ini from this youtube url https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTJ1P5Qx5BU. I can play the game without stuttering issue. No fps drops significant. Average 40 fps on everywhere (including on Hogsmeade and Forbidden forest during battle/duelist).
Change to GE-Proton7-49 as it has a massive effect on positive performance while running mostly on high and FSR set to quality!!
Just mate the right trackpad as mouse and left mouse click for quicker menu navigation, highly recommended!
Mainly little bits of light coming through doors onto the door frames but nothing major
When ever transitioning from Hogwarts to the outside it would drop below 30 FPS and bounce from 25 - 30 FPS BUT without any stuttering apart from on the broom full speed through the forbidden forest but considering most of the settings are on high and FSR set to quality I'm pretty impressed
In game settings are as follows -FSR 2 Quality -Sharpness 0.2 -Vsync off -Framerate uncapped -Motion blur off -Depth of field off (on only has a slight negative effect on FPS) All set to high apart from; -Fog low -Sky low -Foliage medium -Post process medium To save extra FPS you can always lower shadow and view distance as I noticed more of a gain from that and didn't notice its effects on the overall quality in game 👍 Play around and see what's best for you but please use GE-Proton7-49 as you will greatly benefit from it and enjoy playing on your deck without the bull "fixes" you'll find online
![](https://avatars.steamstatic.com/5fbcd266b35ce3f9906d0f302c278885931d8878_full.jpg)
Impossible to get a consistent framerate in all areas in addition to frequent stutter. It's simply a poor experience.
Audio sometimes drops out, also seemingly due to memory issues
Frequent seconds-long stutter due to memory/VRAM issues. Anything that is not currently in memory can cause stutter when it needs to be loaded. Loading a new area frequently introduces stutter, but (re)loading animations can do so as well. Jumping, dodging, and abilities can all cause stutter if they were booted from memory due to loading a new area.
Settings for mostly consistent 30fps, albeit with frequent stutter, for 1080p docked:
1600x900 with FSR 2 Performance ingame. Then through gamescope enable FSR upscaling.
- effects: high
- material: low
- fog: medium
- sky: low
- foliage: low (medium is too much when in forests)
- post process: high
- shadow: medium
- texture: low
- view distance: medium
- population: medium
(just don't look too closely at the screen)
![](https://avatars.steamstatic.com/3d71e515ead01e785e7f6516f44d57cc137bbb43_full.jpg)
-set all settings to medium except textures, set textures to high -use the global steamOS FSR and set the scale slider to 5 -don't use the games built in FSR when on steam deck, didn't really see any graphical improvements and the steamOS FSR option worked a lot better.
%command%
FPS limit to 40, FSR 2 balanced
The game is DX12 and uses VKD3D and not DXVK so do NOT use 'RADV_PERFTEST=gpl' (pointless)
The Deck can play this game SUPER well for what it is - I prefer playing on my PC but I will take the deck any day of the week!
Bind common things such as reveal to back triggers. Published my changes - Look for a Community Profile by SanitizeR to test it out.
Upon the 3rd or 4th time of sleeping the deck, when you come back the audio blips at a constant rate for almost every other word and then that audio glitch begins to make the words out of sync and game to stutter.
I suggest until we get a good patch out that you save and close the game out every night so the next day you can open up the game once more and have perfect audio and no stutter/jitter that comes after sleeping the game/console.
Steam Deck verification is 100% correct. It looks better than people on Reddit posting screenshots of their low settings! Buy it. Play it. Love it. GOTY contender 100%.
![](https://avatars.steamstatic.com/9f52c7faf303c75283eb25c409d8b537cd198998_full.jpg)
everything low, in game fsr 2.0 balanced sharpness 1, v-sync off, framerate 60, refresh rate 40hz
hitching in the game (which is normal for the port at the time of reporting)
ive just gotten out of hogsmead and so far if your are running my summary settings, the game runs mostly at 40hz dipping to mid 30s walking into new areas. the game does hitch but no worse then on my desktop. im very happy playing through my first run on deck. (will update if problems occur in stuff like combat)
Removing graininess of anti-aliasing makes the game looks a lot better, here's how:
- Enter desktop mode
- Go to your compatdata folder and open Hogwarts Legacy folder named “990080” > pfx > drive_c > users > steamuser > AppData > Local > Hogwarts Legacy > Saved > Config > WindowsNoEditor
- Open the “Engine.ini” file and add at the end this command:
[SystemSettings] r.DefaultFeature.AntiAliasing=0 r.PostProcessAAQuality=0
- Save the file and exit Note: enabling an upscaler from in-game settings doesn't completely disable anti-aliasing, the command above from u/QikoG35 does. Additional settings: • Intel XeSS upscaler set to "Quality" • Graphic options (from reddit u/xelasarg): • Effects=Low • Materials=Medium • Fog=Low • Sky=Low (these two volumetric options are performance hogs) • Foliage=Medium • Post Processing=Low • Shadows=Low • Textures=Low • View Distance=Medium • Population=Medium • Steam Deck Framerate Limit set to 30
TDP: 12W
Since the latest update performance has been much better, still see framerates around 15-25 during cutscenes and when loading new areas.
RADV_PERFTEST=gpl
Framerate dips in cutscenes and loading new areas.
All settings set to medium and textures and material quality set to medium, seems to be working well, particularly after latest patch. I also run FSR 2.0 on balanced and sharpeness to maximum.
I also disabled framerate cap and vsync, and set max framerate to 60 in Steam Deck's menu (I'm not concerned about battery life as I'm always near a charger) as many other reports recommended and found a big improvement.
With these changes I get around 40-60 fps, depending on the area. Overall the game is definitely playable, and I'm enjoying it, and haven't had any crashes or bugs yet.
