Bad default controller bindings, low af performance
Had to change default controller bindings, but even after that i couldn't play comfortable. Controllers were badly rotated, performance was terrible (over 16ms to render frame on lowest settings, while on windows i could play on max settings at 120hz). Used Quest 2 via ALVR (most likely all problems were due to my hmd)
changed controller binding for correct tracking
oculus quest 2 failed to default binding

Works without any additional configuration
Had to lower the refresh rate to 90HZ to get a clear picture
Just fix the controller bindings as I instruct and you should be fine. Game runs beautifully.
With the Aftershock update, the Valve Index knuckles stopped working not only on Linux, but on Windows too. The symptoms are clear, your VR hands do not appear in-game and you obviously cannot interact with menus and controls, so you can't even start a game. To fix that, call the overlay menu by pressing the system button, then choose "controller bindings". The top of the Window should indicate "Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners" and not "OpenXR Test Instance", if it does not, wait a little or exit this window and select controller bindings again. Then select "Custom" on the slider, and press the button to choose the bindings. You might have to wait a little more for that window to populate with the Community Bindings; amongst them, choose "Liam's Foot" that makes the game work again. You might have to exit the game and restart SteamVR after ensuring this binding is correctly activated.
Other than the controller issue the game functioned perfectly.
In order to get past the initial menu, you have to rebind the controllers. There's plenty of community made mappings available. This was tested on the Index controllers.
Worked pretty well for me after using a community controller mapping with Valve Index and Knuckles
The game needs pretty low settings to run smoothly. I can't really say if it's the game itself or Proton
Couldn't select anything from the menu, triggers didn't work. Workaround: see zaggyNL's report, since I have the original vive I selected the second community profile from someone who played a lot and that worked.

Controller fix (menu does not work):
-go to SteamVR Dash by pressing menu button on Knuckles controller
-Manage controller bindings
-Active controller binding->Default to Custom
-Choose Another
-Search for the "The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners Active Sprint while Right Trackpad" custom binding and press View
-Select this Binding
Works with Proton 5.0.3! Select custom controller binding to fix menu
-Make sure you use Proton 5.0.3: go to the properties of the game, check
"Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" and select Proton 5.0.3.
AMD users only: Make sure you have latest Mesa and enable ACO, I use the Kisak PPA:
https://launchpad.net/%7Ekisak/+archive/ubuntu/kisak-mesa Change the game's launch options to: RADV_PERFTEST=aco %command%

the default knuckles settings were not used. so I got stuck in the main menu. My hands or controllers were not visible as well. I had to load a custom community setting (via SteamVR dashboard) which fixed that for that session. after a 2nd start of the game, the settings were gone, and I wasn't able to load other settings (probably SteamVR dashboard bug, and not a game bug).
Proton 5.0-3 got a special "Fix crash on launch in The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners" and the game is playable very fine, when the knuckles are detected correcty (see above). I hope the knuckles problem will be fixed as well.
You click "Play", button turns to "Cancel", no windows appear, the button turns again to "Play"

The game does not even start, as a RTWorkQ.DLL is missing.
