Turned off Steam Input to have controller detected
Open the config on first launch and follow earlier suggestions for no frame buffer and no system mouse. I used windowed full screen at 4k. Sometimes the game window would come up and then die, I'd have to restart once or a few times but then everything would be fine. Use Proton GE to see the movie cutscenes.

Plays wonderfully if you switch to experimental Proton and pick a community layout that lets you use the inventory without the touch screen.
Game would stutter on default Proton version; no issues on experimental Proton
Very occasional missing textures, usually fixed on restarting the game.
A few times character/NPC models would spin rapidly. Usually fixed with a restart.
Most of the game plays well, and the startup/intro videos load fine, but there are a few mid- to late-game FMV sequences that hardlocked the game. These FMVs do not appear in the 'movies' folder in the game files. With much tinkering I was able to get one to play upside down and slowly, but the end of game FMV sequence would not play. I ended up having to stream the game from Windows in order to complete the ending.
Runs perfectly after choosing settings in the configuration tool
Select the "Controller Layout Tool", via the second launch option. From here I chose the following settings: Preset = Highest, Use V-Sync = true, Frame Buffer = Unused, Resolution = 1920x1080x32, Use System Mouse Cursor = false. The game has run perfectly so far. Also, I increased the gamma by one notch, as-per TheGameSquid's recommendation; greatly improves visibility.

This older game had plenty of issues on Windows, but ran OOTB for me on Linux.
- The default brightness is lower than it should be by default. A little nudge to the brightness setting is needed.
- Towards the end of the game there were a few short moments with very minor graphical artifacts.
The mouse was a little jittery as first, but this was fixed by disabling "Use System Mouse" in the config tool.
On Windows, you need to use wrappers like dgVoodoo to get a stable framerate, and even then the game can act up a little, and I struggld to make it behave correctly on my ultrawide monitor. On Linux, it basically ran out of the box for me without any of those issues. Once you take care of a few very minor issues, it's smooth sailing.
Note: this game will pop out a progrom on the Wine system tray. This is normal.
Custom controller layout and manual configuration of graphics settings allow for flawless experience
The game requires a slight amount of set-up in order to run optimally:
- Apply a custom controller config (I recommend the one used for this review)
- Launch the settings application, set the display resolution to 800p
Otherwise it runs without issue out of the box.
Slowdown occurs, albeit rarely, in the latter half of the game.
The cutscenes play correctly on Proton-7.0rc3-GE-1. Aside from infrequent slowdown, the only remaining issues are also present when playing on Windows.

Just a glitch on an NPC near the end of the game, also happens on Windows
Sadly unlike most older falcom games where the combo of directshow and lavfilters tends to work, here it doesn't. If you're ok with the videos not playing(you can always watch them on their folder if you want) the game runs perfectly
No opening movie

5.21-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
When using a DualShock 4, the camera would constantly rotate to the right. I was able to fix this by disabling Steam Input for the game. After that, the controls worked perfectly.
With proton 5, the game now plays perfectly without any graphical issues. The opening movie does not play, due to missing codecs.
The graphical glitches are now fixed, the game is now actually playable.
I have Logitech F310, which supports both XInput and DirectInput. If set to XInput mode, the camera keeps spinning to the right, but it works fine with DirectInput. I didn't have that problem last time I tested the game, and I don't know why.
It's working way better than the last time I tried, except a bug with the controls. (see above) It should still be perfect if you play with DInput controller or KB+M.

Framerate, controls and sound work pretty well, but I wouldn't try going through the whole game with graphics this glitchy.
Tried making a 32-bit prefix, game refuses to launch with it at all.
Textures don't show up normally, some are missing and a lot of them are just random colors and gradients. On my machine it looks just like in someone else's old report: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/1688
I think one of the errors I got in the log file could hint at what's wrong: "fixme:d3d8:d3d8_vertex_shader_init Usage 0x10 not implemented." Something to do with how Wine/Proton handles DX8, but I have no idea what to do about it.

Game loads and runs but textures are missing

Launcher opens a window for the game, but it's a black screen with nothing loading.

The game runs and plays, and would probably be classified as 'stable' except for the widespread graphical issues (no textures, mainly shaded single-color polygons).
