It runs smoothly on Linux Mint 22.1.
It's an amazing game. Super recommended for people who used to play warcraft and starcraft... the game is fantastic. Its gameplay isn't as pulished as that of SC2, or WC3, but it's still fun to play, and demanding, even on normal difficulty... but on the story side of things, Spellforce teaches Blizzard how that part of gaming needs to be handled... the game has a lot of The Witcher 3 vibes, but it's an STS... I love this game.

I compiled my own proton version to fix the fonts. You can get it here: https://github.com/krupar101/spellforce3_proton
Fonts are broken in the default proton

Game works great with all the default settings. Performance is great, no crashes. Fonts are a bit weird but readable.
Fonts are a bit weird but not nearly as bad as older reports
Must alt-tab twice
Have not tried multiplayer or journey but I don't expect that they'll work (as per older reports)

Switch to publictest if you want to play online modes (campaign mode still works without switching).
I was able to play Skirmish, Journey and Arena in solo mode after switching branch to publictest. On the normal version of the game those modes are not playable due to network error.
I didn't encounter any performance issues while playing without any tinkering. In-game fonts are little crusty, but still readable (setting FREETYPE_PROPERTIES="truetype:interpreter-version=35"
has no effects).

A bit of tinkering, fonts are not rendered properly, font size can be fixed. Multiplayer works on public test branch, can play all modes!
Edited font scale in config_system.cfg file, changed to 1.20.
Too small text, fonts are not rendered correctly
Multiplayer did not work at first. I fixed it by changing the game to public test branch by going to game Properties/Betas. Can play all modes.
Same as for online multiplayer
Multiplayer works by running the public test branch of the game. Needs a bit of tinkering to be playable on deck

Campaign should work, but nothing else does, can't recommend
Fonts are bugged as well, but this should be fixable
I've played the first campaign for 60 hours without issue, but i'm really saddened to not being able to play the other modes, like Journey.
Only able to play the Campaign mode. Skirmish, Journey and Arena, even in solo, are blocked by an unknown network error.
There's still a second free campaign i can and will probably play.
Barely playable on Intel Arc A770
Broken SSAO; Ugly fonts
Ugly fonts, not the SSAO, is the worst problem with this game on Intel Arc Graphics
FPS is unstable with Proton 7. However that wasn't a problem with GE.
Multiplayer is unavailable. According to the forums that was also a bug in Win10, though one that was resolved by later updates.
Unable to host or join a lobby
I tried a game against AI, wich should not involve the network. I encountered the error Network request failed(unknown error)" as well.
While I expect, from what i have seen, the solo campaing to fully work and be of substantial length(20 hours atleast). Most People probably don't play for the story, but for the various Co-op, PvP and PvAI Modes. For them this would be unplayable.
The singleplayer campaign worked without any issues, but haven't tried multiplayer

Fonts render ugly
Download sources of proton, apply patch and compile it need to fix ugly fonts render. Patch from comment #14 https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47085 Proton GE sources can be downloaded there: https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom
Fonts with this patch render more or less fine, but some letters float up and down relative to the line.

Reborked
After Reforced update the game crashes directly at the splashscreen, showing an unreadable (empty) message box that should supposedly contain an error.
Legacy Version can optionally be used which still runs with all the same problems that were already mentioned in other reports.

lutris-fshack-6.21-6
When switching out and then back into the game, it doesn't properly reclaim the whole screen (e.g. in my case KDE's bottom panel still shows) and also as a result mouse coordinates are off. This can be fixed by going to the Display settings and reapplying the window mode (either Fullscreen or Borderless Window).
Fonts are ugly as hell, though I suppose still legible enough for the game to be played. This can be partially fixed by launching the game with a FREETYPE_PROPERTIES="truetype:interpreter-version=35" environment variable. It won't make the fonts pretty, far from it, but it will make them less ugly. I really hope this bug will be fixed properly at some point but seeing as the devs haven't already fixed it in the new Reforced edition (which is otherwise very good, so kudos to them) I wouldn't hold my breath.

Game works fine if not for the alt tab. Multiplayer wasn't tested, as there was no one to test it with
Alt-tabbing killed the access to game, whether the game was set fullscreen or windowed fullscreen. Game sounds played in the backround.

Proton-5.9-GE-7-ST GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.9-GE-7-ST
Game works well enough to play through enjoyably but saving often is recommended due to game itself being prone to crashing.
Some crackling when the fps drops happen but none otherwise.
Alt-tabbing does not work whatsoever.
Overall the game runs well but after an hour or so I start getting random slowdowns where the fps drops to 20-40 for a bit. I even had a case during a long session where I had 2 fps in the party selection screen when trying to enter an area from the world map. It was fine again after restarting the game. These performance issues seem to happen on Windows too.
Crashes occur pretty randomly and were much more frequent before setting "Point light shadow resolution" to 0. With that change, the crashes very rarely happen. The vm.max_map_count fix suggested by another report had no effect on the game crashing. After about 30 hours I started getting crashes when exiting the game. The crashing also seems to be an issue on Windows.

Good performances but you may need some modifications
The full screen mod freeze the game
To have no freeze you may need to increase the sysctl option vm.max_map_count to prevent crashes due to memory allocation limits in areas with lots of geometry:
Execute in your shell:
sysctl vm.max_map_count => To check the value sudo sysctl -w vm.max_map_count=16777216 => To set it temporarily

Some fonts are hard to read. The game would crash at certain points but setting the "Point light shadow resolution" to 0 solved that.

Game runs pretty well. I've noticed some graphical issues here and there and had a crash early on. Fonts are very strange, but legible.

Just tried it recently and it runs, looks a bit weird though.

Honestly i don't know if I did something or it just started working. The only thing I did since last time I tried it and it wouldn't even start was to install samba and some fonts on wine(I don't think these matter).
Font looks funny but game seems to be playable.

Fails to load via steam.
Tested in Wine Current, it works, with texture issues (may be mesa related)

won't start at all

Won't start.

Won't start, issues an error dump message which I sent to the devs :D

Crashes at startup with an error dump
