Not using GE-Proton7-55 will lead to pre-rendered cutscenes having showstopper issues (e.g. non-progressable black screens, "TV color test" screens, etc). This is the most up-to-date Proton/GE that fully works in my tests.
- Players MUST fully rebind the controller in-game after initial launch.
- Game doesn't support gamepad prompts, so a mod ( https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3324691800 ) is needed. After extraction it can be applied with:
protontricks --no-bwrap --cwd-app -c "wine cmd /c Patch.bat" 278080

Once you tinker with setting the game to Proton 8, and fix the button prompts, it's not bad.
The game does not use controller prompts, though it can detect a controller. Follow the guide to use Xbox 360 prompts.
For the guide included, make sure to change the default.ini path to your game directory, since by default, it was intended for Windows. Make sure that the game boots with the config UI, then launch "LaunchDW8.exe" from there and add the "Xpad.tpf" as your package when prompted. If everything is followed correctly, the game will show Xbox360 prompts rather than keyboard + mouse if you prefer a controller. You might need to remap the entire controller if A and B being swapped bothers you. The game doesn't swap rebinds in the menu, so choose your layout accordingly. The game still requires a key press for the start menu for some reason. Hit space for something.
As before, this game does not run on the latest version of Proton. You will be met with a black screen. Switch to Proton 8.0-5 to get the game running. All audio and cutscenes work properly.

For FMVs to work, and for the game not to crash before title screen, must use GE-Proton8. In my case GE-Proton8-25. Not Proton 7, 8, 9, Hotfix, Experimental, nor GE-9.

Using Proton Experimental and Proton 9, I haven't been able to play the video playback and only resulting on broken TV video
I've tried Proton GE 9.9 but it makes the game crash, I think it's because the opening video won't load/play with this proton version. To use proton GE version, I have to vsh to borealis in crosh shell then navigate to .steam/root/compabilitytools.d/ then download proton GE with wget utilities. Game runs well with proton9 and proton experimental, just having a rarely freeze frame for a second.

No matter the layout selected, the game only displays PC keyboard keys and doesn't recognize the Steam Deck as a console controller. This means you have to press buttons randomly and can't access all the controls. Furthermore, in the menus, you have to use the Steam Deck's virtual keyboard to select anything.
DW9 XLCE displays all the UI controls as PC keys. When playing with the Steam Deck controller (X, Y, AB buttons, triggers, joysticks, etc.), you have no idea what to select and have to guess. This makes the gaming experience very unpleasant, and I don’t have access to all the commands.

Had to remap the controller, can be done by hitting F12 in the controller menu in options
without the command line argument, any pre-rendered cutscenes will have no audio

gamemoderun MANGOHUD=1 %command%
Starts up and runs perfectly. Using Wayland
Some mid-missions saves would crash the game on loading, some work fine.
Occasional crashes when starting a story mission, when starting the pre-mission cutscenes.

Works OOTB!
Default gamepad (Xbox 360) mappings are broken, press F12 in config screen to clear and re-config.
Button prompts still show keyboard inputs, DS3 on bluetooth was otherwise completely functional
It really just played as expected
Played on Steam Deck. Installed just fine. I disabled the videos in the config (which I used touch screen on the for that separate config tool that you get the option for when you launch), but outside of that everything is just left be. Ran great, no issues. Honestly don't know why it shows as totally unplayable, because my experience is quite different.
Played it with GE-Proton (did not try stock Steam Deck Proton). Played pretty flawlessly. Game installed an ran without issues. Played only 1 mission for now. No graphical or audio errors. Cutscenes played just fine. Controller was detected just fine. Highly recommend on the Steam Deck with GE-Proton.
Attacking results in minor artifacts and some visual effects also seem to trigger these
If you can live with the artifacts it is perfectly playable.
Launch the configuration tool and turn off movies, then it'll work just fine
Set "Play Movie" option to "off" in configuration settings and it runs flawlessly.

Disabled video in the configuration menu and everything worked fine. In-game cinematics still play, can't remember what was this video that was disabled.

I can launch the configuration tool and change and save settings. Nothing else.
I have disabled movies and set all to low. I also tried to launch in windowed mode. It tries to open hangs on an empty window and then closes. I also tried to launch from big picture mode.

Game runs flawlessly
Cinematics need to be disabled from configuration, otherwise game won't even start.

You need to disable cinematics in the configuration tool. If your wireless controller keeps spinning the camera even when it is turned off, do the following: go to /home/user_name/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/278080/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/TecmoKoei/Dynasty Warriors 8/ and find inputmap1.dat and inputmap2.dat . Rename 2 to 1, and 1 to 2. Now your controller configuration is on player 2, and won't get in the way. Now plug out your controller. Now go in the game, go to options, and delete the button configuration for player 2 (TAB), but don't touch the gamepad inputs. Now you can freely set any button for your player 1 configuration without getting a prompt about duplicates. After you set it to your liking, don't forget to apply the changes and save the options. Now go out of the game, plug in your controller, and that is it. Now you can play the game with the keyboard, without your controller spinning the camera, and preventing you from changing the button layout.

Failed. Game will not start

starts after disabling cinematics in the config also controller button layout is switched and can not be fixed and you get spinning camera with a controller otherwise playable with keyboard

"Play Movie" must be set to "off" in the game configuration utility, otherwise game will not load. When using an Xbox One controller, the camera constantly spins counter-clockwise.

Cinematics must be disabled in config app
