[cnc-draw](https://github.com/FunkyFr3sh/cnc-ddraw) is a sweet way to restore the game, nice work! Support those developers.
Ended up installing cnc-draw via Protontricks
The game stutters in full screen mode when the Steam Overlay displays a notification toast, as soon as the toast is finished speed is restored. Ways around it are maximised window, windowed, or turning off steam overlay.
I tried with command line before using cnc-draw, in the end I was able to remove the command parameters and just use cnc-draw with Proton9.0(beta) and Proton8-05.
Install cnc-draw by:
- Copying the files into the game directory
- Use Protontricks to open Explorer for that game
- Run cnc-draw.exe
I'd do this cnc-draw patch as soon as the game doesn't launch, as messing around with configs might prevent cnc-draw from working correctly.

Does not run very stable and not very well without tweaks.
i play this the old way in wine and then use lutris i have so much more control that way

when you play it like i does and use lutris then you need to go to Runner Options and under Dll overwrite you need to put ddrew.dll into key and n into the value since wineoverrides command dont work with lutris

Game crashes constantly without fixes
pause menue buttons cause weird flickering and lag when being drawn initially
does not work with straight proton expiermental
don't alt tab, the game doesn't restore properly
Stutters in the menus, mouse moves slow, briefing text is slow (on missions that dont use fmv)
Crashes after a few seconds, either to desktop or you have to end task
Launches with an error message
Error - Unable to allocate primary video buffer - aborting
