Runs without any tweaking or huge issues. It feels a bit stuttery compared to Windows, but not laggy or like it's actually affecting gameplay in the slightest. (It's either not having any effect on input at all or is something my brain easily compensates for.)
Runs flawlessly out of the box. While there was no real need to do so, Gallium Nine also works quite well with this for AMD users.
Requires you to initialise the games prefix (Run the game once and close it after the CD key thing comes up) and then run "protontricks 105450 mfc42 winxp l3codecx corefonts" then works perfectly afterwards. Gallium Nine also works flawlessly with this.
Works flawlessly
Installed it, ran and logged into my old account successfully, went fullscreen and set all options to maximum then picked a song, loading was very quick and I didn't even experience any shader compilation stuttering. Score also uploaded at the end of the song, too.
Basically, it was identical to Windows for me.
The only tweak you need is to run "protontricks 242920 -q xact" in the terminal after running the game once in Steam.
Performance is at Windows level for me, it's probably a tad slower but it's not anything I can pick up on.
Playing build #59 in non-VR mode.
Very stuttery with esync enabled, but once I disabled esync it's actually smoother than running it under native Windows with my setup even with maxed out graphics at 2560x1080. Other than that, no extra configuration or problems I have noted
Still has small hitches in the framerate here and there but that's something that occurs under Windows and is due to the early access nature of the game, seems to occur less often than in Linux but at the same time I've played just over 20 hours under Windows and around 1 under Linux so it could be related. :)
Game performance has suffered significantly since my last review of Proton compatibility. Windows allows me to have everything maxed out with little stutter but under Proton I cannot have shadows on at all or the game becomes a lag-fest regardless of whether I use DXVK or not, or have esync enabled/disabled.
With shadows disabled and AA turned off, the game is perfectly playable however. DXVK works but Wine D3D11 is a smoother experience.
DXVK1.0 helped out significantly and now the game runs a bit slower than on Windows, but still more than well enough to play.
Runs with DXVK on Vulkan enabled graphics cards in non-VR mode, performance is ~10-20% lower than on Windows.
I'm using vkBasalt for SMAA as the in-game AA has a larger performance hit
Only in Proton 5.0, under 4.11 the audio is like Windows.
Expect a performance drop versus Windows, but still playable in non-VR on my meagre setup.
Proton 5.0, both Valve and the GE variants have audio echoing problems but Proton 4.11 works fine.
I haven't got a VR headset to test the VR modes, but given the state of VR on Linux I wouldn't cross my fingers...But with the new update adding so much content and Proton 4.11 working well with non-VR anyway, it's not like you won't be able to have some fun here.
I recommend using vkBasalt with this title too; I just have the default sharpening and SMAA filters on but it's actually improved performance a tad over the default in-game AA.
Works flawlessly with and without gallium nine and zero tweaks. Resolution options are a bit weird but also work somehow. (eg. I'm at 2560x1080, and somehow get native res when I have it set to "1920x1080 32bit HD" and Widescreen on)
No problems or extra configuration related to Proton/Wine/whatever else at all. I had to go rootin' around through my FalloutPrefs.ini but that's because of the lack of OOTB Ultrawide support which is just as problematic under Windows.
However, once I had that figured out I played through the entirety of the Goodsprings part of the game with no issues running the vanilla game completely maxed out...now to try mods because I hear New California works with Proton! :)
Does work in Proton 8 and GE-Proton8 if you're just playing single player or joining other peoples servers but if you try to host a server then it won't appear for other players, however reverting to Proton7 fixes this issue.
Installed the game. Started the game. Set everything to highest settings on DX11. Everything worked flawlessly. Basically no way for me to tell if the game is running in native Windows or via Proton, it's the exact same experience from installation to playing.
Zero problems to report even with modding and ultrawide resolution. Ran with the launch options: "PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 -intro:off -f -r2560x1080x32 -CustomResolution:enabled -CPUPriority:high -CPUCount:2"
Runs perfectly with no tweaks, actually runs somewhat better than on Windows with Gallium Nine on my system. Mods also seem to work normally too.
Used "protontricks 244850 -q --force dotnet472 xact" to get running. Game worked well enough to play even on high settings, however it was stuttering including the audio and GPU load (I can hear when my GPU is idle or under load thanks to coil whine) near constantly (Even in the main menu until I disabled the bg music) and crashed after half an hour or so of the vanilla "Learning to Survive" scenario.
DISABLE_LAYER_AMD_SWITCHABLE_GRAPHICS_1=1 VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/radeon_icd.i686.json:/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/radeon_icd.x86_64.json %command%
Mild performance drop versus on Windows, went from maxed out to high/medium with the same performance.
Was not able to start the game at first with a "GPU does not meet minimum required specifications" error, but adding those command line switches that I found in another ProtonDB contribution fixed the problem.
Just needs a simple fix, hopefully this is relatively well known for other AMD Ryzen 7000 users for the wider launch.
No major configuration needed or the like, I just heeded what the other reviews here said and tried immediately with the experimental branch using the OpenGL renderer ("-force-opengl" in the Launch Options on Steam) with zero Linux specific issues or other performance woes.
Resolution kept going black and not applying when I hit "Apply" on that settings screen but that happens on Windows too, and after playing around with it for a minute or so I eventually had it running in full screen at my native resolution maxed out.
Running on the experimental branch, now seems to work without -force-opengl when running under Proton 4.2, my system was sitting at 60fps with the game maxed out using the default DX11 renderer. Had been playing for a few hours with -force-opengl, framerates were good but I'd get random black squares and an occasional bug where a colour would eventually take over the screen until I saved and reloaded.
