common spikes of triangles from planets etc. Not too serious.
Graphic problems made game unplayable for me.
Whole screen has red hue on it, making playing pretty much impossible
Assuming you edit the text file to disable music and set the resolution properly, it should be okay.
I had to edit SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/SpaceEmpiresV/SE5/Data/Settings.txt
and change Allow Music
to FALSE
or else the game will cause problems past the main launcher.
Obviously, this means no background music is available, but other sounds work fine.
A few lines emanate from various planets and stuff. They don't really get in the way, though.
I experienced issues with the default graphics settings. Using the settings in the game's main launcher, I had to change the resolution to either match my screen's native resolution or otherwise set it to Windowed
in order to avoid problems with Xfce panels appearing on top of the game, as an example.
Also, changing the Display Driver
option at the top causes problems, so it's best to leave it on the default.
Lastly, the launcher will fall back to the background when a window is closed. I suspect this might be a conflict with Proton/Wine and Xfce's focus-stealing prevention, but I haven't tested further. It's easy enough to just click the window button on the panel or use Alt-Tab to bring it back to the foreground and it doesn't happen in the main game, so I consider it a minor issue.
The previous report by VinnieSift does mention the Tutorial causing crashing. I haven't tested it, so I can't verify whether or not this is still a problem. I can verify that both Quick Start and New Game does work fine.
There's also some errors that appear that reference being unable to load a file that has no filename. Often, multiple ones will appear at once, but closing each of them out will eventually get back to the game and it appears to function without issue, so it's likely just a glitch caused by differences in filesystems between Linux and Windows.
Menus work, but new game won't start. Go to ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/SpaceEmpiresV/SE5/Data/, open Settings.txt and change Allow Music to FALSE. You won't have music, but the game works. Was unable to play the tutorial, but Quick Start worked fine. Solution from WineHQ.
There is no music, of course.
Some lines crossing the screen from some objects like stars or planets. Nothing serious.
Runs fine until main menu. Game did NOT crash but.. I dont know.
I was unable to start a game as hitiing most of the buttons did nothing. Maybe I am too dumb(i dont know).
Hitting scenario button showed some micro windows but anyway I have not figured out, what to do.
main menu works, but pressing play for a standard space empire 5 experience does absolutely nothing, also switch graphics to wine causes the whole desktop enviroment to crash
Managed to get the game running by setting it to windowed mode and playing with different display modes in launcher. Still, FPS were low to the point of unresponsiveness, even in menus.
Completely unplayable. Launcher works, but the moment you go into the main game, it freezes/crashes depending on which version of Proton/Wine you're using.
Launcher starts normally but crashes when loading the game
