Obviously works
It's an open-source game, of course it's gonna work well on Linux.

Native support and works right out of the box.
I can join a server without any issues.
OpenTTD (Open-source reimplentation of Transport Tycoon Deluxe) works right out of the box because it has native support. In a worse scenario, you can run the Windows version with Proton or Wine, but I haven't dealt with that issue.

OpenTTD works wonderfully out of the box, I'd be scandalized if it didn't.

Out of the box

The game itself is wonderful and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in logistics games
Music was entirely missing
Things to check first:
- Are sound effects fine?
- Is the music volume set above 0?
- Is the music player (audio icon on the top right in-game) showing that music is playing?
If you, like me, answered yes to all of those, try these steps:
- Installed
timidity++
andfreepats-general-midi
(also known astimidity-freepats
on other distros) - Added the line
soundfont /usr/share/soundfonts/freepats-general-midi.sf2
to my/etc/timidity/timidity.cfg
- Started the service via
timidity -iA
(See https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Timidity%2B%2B#Daemon for details) - Started OpenTTD
I'm uncertain why the music broke, it was fine last year when I played, but once you know the fix it isn't hard to implement, so I'm not too bothered.
MIDI didn't work at first under wine, but can be fixed by installing fluidsynth, a soundfont of your choice (gm.sf2 usually), and having a script that runs "fluidsynth -a pulseaudio /path/to/sf2" at startup
Works out of the box

major windowing issues
windowing is a mess on my setup. i'll basically just have to play around constantly going in and out of fullscreen until it magically works. half the time it recognizes my 1920x1080 monitor as 3000x1080, and I couldn't get launch options to work to try and launch it in 1920x1080. eventually though it will work and I'll have it fullscreen, it just takes far too much effort. note that i do use wayland and hyprland
the windowing problems are the only hiccup with this experience. note that i did play with jgrpp, but i still had the windowing issues when playing vanilla.

Great game and worked out of the box.
Laggy window management.
I won't recommend the Steam version but it works.

Text is quite small but readable.

works perfectly fine out of the box!
