DXVK_FRAME_RATE=40 %command%
Game crashes on startup when using resolutions >1080p. I have a resolution of 2560x1600 and added a virtual desktop with the resolution of 4000x2500 to even start it up. Afterwards just toggle with a shortcut which can be set in the keyboard shortcut settings of your linx distro to fullscreen. Et voila: Fullscreen with 2560x1600 without any issues.
Protontricks is really key here by adding the emulated virtual desktop with a way higher resolution. Now it works perfectly and even sharper than windows.
DXVK_STATE_CACHE=0
Intro music plays into blackscreen.
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
Run perfectly on max settings
Framerate Limit 40 Refresh Rate 40
Projected Battery Life 5 hours
Using a Window Manager (dwm). Had to add the dwm-awesomebar patch to minimize the game and maximize it again. By that, the black screen went away
Mouse is a bit off
Game works perfectly with proton experimental, launch command and comunity controls setting. If you liked it, you will like it here too!
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
just cap the framerate to 60
Just switched to experimental and copied the launch option from the top raitngs, runs nice and smooth

PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
It needs Proton Experimental, it does not need any launch options, as I've tried with and without any launch options. I do get the issue with the mouse not going to the bottom of the screen or to the far right, but as a previous person said, just alt+tab, and it's fine.
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
When on the main menu, the mouse cannot move to the bottom half of the screen. A quick alt-tab fixes the issue. Happens only on startup.

I am extremely happy and satisfied how much Steam and Linux support has evolved!

protontricks ... winecfg
-> set virtual desktop (1280x800 or other)
In Documents/My Games/... config file turn off fullscreen
At start on virtual desktop visible game window may not appear:
- click game icon on virtual desktop to "start" game,
- press OK on window message,
- set game resolution according virtual desktop or other
Played GOG (Gold) version with Proton 7.0-1 and tinkering with game window.
Good Experience
Not full resolution and the game minimizes on startup
Some minor issues like: The game minimizes at startup The Game doesn't cover fullscreen
Copied savestates work great Just copy them into SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/15170/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/My Games/Heroes of Might and Magic V/Profiles//Saves/
Sadly no Cloud Saves
fix: shm-size-bytes = 4194304 in /etc/pulse/client.conf and /etc/pulse/daemon.conf
Black screen, but can be fixed by switching a few times windows (alt+tab, 2-3 times)
scroll not working, use pgup/pgdn instead
Works perfectly with Proton Experimental
Splash screen shows for a sec and stops automatically
Splash screen shows for a sec and stops automatically
Plays sound then quits
Starts minimized. Audio briefly plays, but no graphics load, and then the game quickly crashes. Tried a number of things but no luck.
Works out-of-the-box
The game doesn't support modern resolutions and has no setting for V-sync, so if you don't want to have 700 FPS like I had, force vsync externally.
Window is occasionally misaligned after alt+tab (appears mostly off the bottoms right hand side of the screen). Just Alt-tab again to fix it.
While the game is playable frame rate feels quite low.
Didn't work very well/at all
Managed to somewhat work on proton ver 3 but not consistently. Tried with launch parameters on different versions and would crash on startup.
Game can only run at lowest settings without configuration file editing.
It crashes on applying graphics settings, Proton Experimental, Proton 5.13-5 same results.
The game is unable to save settings changes. Default settings can be edited manually but user profiles are not created for single player modes.
The only Proton that was able to run the game correctly was Proton 5.11 GE 3 MF with PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command%
The game run fine on the usual Wine in the past. The modern Proton versions have serious problems to run it (black screen, scrambled voice), even with newer GE version it failed to run correctly.
The only Proton that was able to run the game correctly was Proton 5.11 GE 3 MF with PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command%
The proposed command in other reports:
PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
was a total disaster. The game run but was had performance of few FPS. Luckily, stripping it down to "PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command%" helped and the game finally regained the previous performance and was playable.
The game starts laggy but after changing the Image Quality the game somehow reloads the graphics and then the game plays fine. This persists over save games also, which is wierd.
Initially, full screen doesn't pop up - after alt-tabbing, the problem seems to be fixed.
After following Leon's advice (in the Tribes of the East protondb section), everything appears to be working fine. As per his report:
"Here are my launch parameters: "PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%".
Game launched successfully, but the cursor stuck within an invisible borders and I could not select any menu item. The solution was to change cursor type to hw. Config file located here: /SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/15370/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/My Games/Heroes of Might and Magic V - Tribes of the East/Profiles//user_a2.cfg Need to change setvar ui_use_hwcursor from 0 to 1."
I also had some slowdown issues when I started the game with 'Very high' graphics. By setting it to 'Normal', and then back to 'Very high', the problem seems to be fixed.
The game needs to run on Proton 3.16 in order to make it playable.
If you are using Gnome you have to start the game then hit the super key and select the second workspace then select the heroes icon in order to play. You have to do this twice.
Works fine by using Proton 4.11-13 or another version with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 flag. After launch will be minimized to task panel (or dock), so just open it again from it.
For disable intro delete or rename file ".steam/steam/steamapps/common/Heroes of Might and Magic 5/video/intro.xml".
You may want launch windowed game. For that set in user.cfg for your profile that located in folder ".steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/15170/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/My Games/Heroes of Might and Magic V" this variables as example:
setvar glx_fullscreen = 0
setvar glx_resolution = 1600x1200 (or another)
setvar window_pos_x = (monitor-width - 1600) / 2
setvar window_pos_y = (monitor-height - 1200) / 2
Don't use PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 or latest Proton without PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1. This will result in missing textures (need to rechange resolution in game) and campaign won't start.
Slightly stretched proportions in 16:9, and don't playable in 21:9 because of this.
Performance much lower than on Windows, but still playable.
Works perfectly, after enabling "Emulate Virtual Desktop".
The games starts, but it shows a black screen while playing the intro sounds; to gain access to the load game screen you need to alt-tab a few times. However the issue can easily avoided by enabling "Emulate Virtual Desktop" in winecfg.
Works fine
Plays fine (no noticable lag after 5 hours) but sound doesn't work
It starts immediately, maybe I need to alt+tab few times before first ubisoft video starts. But the main problem currently I see is that I DON''T HAVE SOUND... I usually play games through wine+steam and I have this problem with this same game on that way. And this is the first game where I simply don't know what to to to fix the sounding problem.
Major lags.
Uncovering fog of war is very slow and choppy. Map zoom out works with page up/down (and scroll wheel but unable to zoom out fully w/ wheel). FPS was about 10 for most of the game, with in-game setting tweaks I got that up to 60 for most of it. Definitely change in-game settings.
I completed the first mission, but no further.
game runs fine for a few minutes, then starts to lag badly. Alt tabbing out to the desktop, and back to the game, or changing the graphics settings in the game gets it running again for a few more minutes, before the symptoms return.
Game seems to be working at first but there is some sort of a memory leak. The same happens when using Wine install. Game is choppy and laggy,. The longer it is played the worse it gets and at some point it almost freezes (especially with further maps). Switching graphic settings resets it and game runs fluently for a moment then becomes laggy pretty quickly and it's all over again. Game is unplayable that way.
No problems
