Couldnt find the reason tho
Pretty great considering it is not native and is made on the gothic engine (which, normally, would require a hundred fixes)

Installed D3D11 renderer mod
Lots of stutter in NPC dense areas - fixed by limiting FPS to ~60
Had like 5 or 6 crashes in 80h playtime, most likely due to engine instability (the mod is massive in scope when compared to the original title)
Had no linux-specific issues throughout whole playthrough, which took around 80h.
If you like G1 and G2 then I highly recommend this mod. It plays like a standalone Gothic 2 expansion/game. Honestly I find it insane that it is available for free, considering how well it is made.
Game crashed after about 1h of play time, game crashed sometimes in the same way on windows so probably it is game issue and not linux.

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw=n,b" %command%
I uploaded UNION Scripts for fast looting and speeding up time - Union Scripts sometimes causes game crashes with triggers on the map. The game is more stable without Union Scripts, but they are playable.
The mouse is very slow - but that's the game's fault, not Linux
Saving the game in the traditional way works without any problems. However, do not use the quick save feature.
After installing the game, upload GD3D11 ( https://github.com/SaiyansKing/GD3D11/releases ) and add the startup command, WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw=n,b" %command%
Playing on HDR,SMAA,GodRays,HBAO+ etc (DX11 - F11 InGame) on windows caused my PFS to drop to 30-40. On linux I was surprised when I didn't have any FPS drops and the FPS stays between 400-800 FPS

Game requires dx11 and zgamepad out of the box. dx11 settings should be customized for steam deck.
MANGOHUD_CONFIG=full,no_display WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dxgi,d3d1;ddraw=n,b" mangohud %command%
For comfortable steamdeck support need to install zgamepad plugin that is currently available in workshop only for gothics (not archolos). WIthout it gamepad emulation is not so good and sensitive is low. Note that after zgamepad installation you will need to disable any community layout. Dx11 is also strongly recommended and can be installed only from desktop mode. After dx11 installation you will need to configurate visual option - that requires external mouse or mouse click emulation and strong nerves. Game is hard for cpu because of the engine but after some tuning is playable.
expernal plugin that currently placed in gothic workshop (zgamepad)

After 120 hours of gameplay I can say this amazing mod works well provided you use some tweaks.
MANGOHUD_CONFIG=full,no_display WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dxgi,d3d1;ddraw=n,b" mangohud %command%
Without GD3D11, the game has issues with alt-tabbing and does not display the opening video in the correct aspect ratio.
The mouse sensitivity it very low. At max it was acceptable for me. If this does not work for you, try out https://github.com/SaiyansKing/GRawInput
Very infrequently the game can crash while saving, corrupting a save. Just make sure to alternate between save slots and you should be fine.
This game runs on an old engine from 2002 using DX7, and is extremely CPU intensive in some areas. The GD3D11 renderer can fix some of this, but you will be limited by single-core CPU performance. This is not a Linux issue, but an engine issue.
The game does crash occasionally. This happens on Windows as well. Save frequentlly, use 2/3 quicksave slots, make periodic hard saves, and do not enable the quicksave feature in the config file.
Here is my general outline of what you should do to enjoy the game. Many of these are not Linux-exclusive issues, but just the effects of this being a very old engine.
- In order to increase compatibility and performance, use https://github.com/SaiyansKing/GD3D11 (dont' forget your WINEDLLOVERRIDES). This also fixes the intro video and alt-tabbing issues.
- You can open the DX11 settings with F11. Make sure NOT to enable
Rain Effects
orHDR
, as they completely ruin the game's style. - In the
System
folder, editSystemPack.ini
, and setHideFocus = 1
. This will disable looting bodies with nothing on them. Trust me, you want this. - Do NOT enable the quicksave functionality in
Gothic.ini
. Create 2 or 3 manual quick save slotes in the first 2 or 3 save slots, and rotate between them. Make a hard save every few hours. Rotate out your hard saves when you run out of slots. I made approx 80 hard saves throughout my time playing. - The City of Archolos is extremely taxing on your CPU. This is an engine limitation. But there is a fix for it. Open the DX11 advanced menu by pressing Ctrl+F11. Then, enable the
Occlusion Culling
option in theGeneral
menu. This relieves stress on the CPU so you should be able to get back to 60 fps again. This does introduce flickering, especially when shifting perspectives, but if you care about smoothness it's worth it. - You probably want to keep mangohud on hand at all times so you can take a peak in areas that cause a peek at it when performance degrades.
Remember: the vast majority of issues are NOT Linux-specific, so if you a fix online it will likely work just as well on Linux as on Windows.

This mod is absolutely amazing and it's worth to overlook a few technical issues to play it
Setting the game to render in a window broke it and I had to revert the changes by editing the ini file.
The brightness/gamma/contrast settings were way more sensitive than normally, but in the end I managed to get the game looking more or less how I wanted.
In-game video didn't work, I had to see the intro and the epilogue on YouTube.
Both alt-tab and alt-escape will almost always freeze and/or crash the game (alt-escape would sometimes work safely though). Windowed mode was broken altogether. Both issues can reportedly be fixed, and this is likely not a proton issue.
Very rarely, but there were slight slowdowns.
Leaving the game in the pause menu for more than around 8 minutes would crash it. Letting the screen dim itself would crash it too.
The engine used in this mod is 20 years old and it is entirely possible that my issues could have been fixed with patches and tinkering. I didn't want to screw around with that and decided to just get over the few minor inconveniences that I experienced.
Please consult the mod's troubleshooting guides (e.g. FAQ on Discord), it has plenty of fixes which might help you with your issues.
I installed the latest https://github.com/SaiyansKing/GD3D11/releases mod. The ran protontricks 1467450 winecfg
and added overrides for each mod dll file (anttweakbar.dll, ddraw.dll etc) in the "Libraries" tab.
In system/Gothic.ini scaleVideos=1
ensures the videos aren't little boxes. useQuickSaveKeys=1
enables quick save/load with F5/F9 (necessary as this is Gothic). Only fullscreen worked properly.
My mouse speed was far too slow in game. I had to reset it to a neutral OS speed before starting the game. I did this using the launch options.
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.mouse speed 0; %command%; gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.mouse speed -0.75

I installed the latest DirectX 11 mod from https://github.com/SaiyansKing/GD3D11/releases. It makes the game run and look quite a bit better. In order to get it working I used Protontricks, which has a fairly easy to use graphical interface if you run this command in a terminal "protontricks 1467450 --gui". In Protontricks an error message about using a 32 bit prefix will likely appear, just say okay to that, then choose "Select the default wineprefix" and press ok, then choose "run winecfg", in that popup go to the "Libraries" tab and add an override for each .dll file found in the DX11 mod, for me this was "anttweakbar.dll", "GFSDK_SSAO_D3D11.win32.dll", "assimp-vc142-mt.dll", "d3dcompiler_47.dll", and "ddraw.dll", these should all be set to "native, builtin" (You'll likely get a warning asking not to do this on "ddraw.dll", but for me it had to be done to get it working). I also went through the .ini files and made changes according to my preferences, this is not necessary though
At the time of posting I have 55.3 hours playtime all in Linux through Proton and most of it with the DX11 mod working properly. It has been very stable. The only issue is it crashes when exiting so I have to end the process, which is only a minor nuisance and doesn't affect actual gameplay at all.
Almost works well.
Mouse sensitivity is too low to be usable. Mouse cursor appears in zStartupWindowed mode making that a poor experience.
Game freezes on exit, has to be killed pkill -KILL Gothic2
Videos/cutscenes are black in fullscreen mode. Windowed mode fixes this, but has other issues like mouse cursor always visible.
Black screen for intro, game freezes after alt-tabing and quiting the game (can close through steam library close button). Works fine

Not working after 1.7.0 patch
Tried to run on proton 7, experimental and Glorius Eggroll. Instantly crashes on all of them.

Ignore my previous report, I just did not have "lib32-nvidia-utils" package installed for some reason.
Alt-tabbing will cause the game to crash, be aware! Steam overlay works, though, if you need a browser...

Not working with any version of Proton
I can get all other games to work with Proton, but not this one. No matter which Proton version, no matter if using WINED3D or not.
The process just quits immediately without showing any window.

Unplayable for me, very low framerate on any graphics settings , proton HUD doesn't work.
To fix mouse issues need to put (( WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput=n" %command )) in properties, now touchpad and mouse works correct, but mouse is very slow (touchpad works great).
Very low framerate on laptop with hybrid graphics. Very unplayable.
Runs perfectly!

Out of the box install (Proton 6.3-8) did not display cutscenes correctly - black screen with audio. Other than that, the game runs well with no issues so far

There is no need to do anything execept to start game with steam play, i believe that it's easier to run it, than running Gothic 2 NOTR
Alt tabbing is likely to crash game; Closing game with "exit" is not working too, game just hangs and need to be closed forcefully

Works like a charm, except for me being unable to change graphics settings
I was not able to change the graphics settings without the game crashing
The game does not have english audio files, so i'd recommend copying the polish ones and add them after setting the game to english again

Works almost perfectly. Occasional crashes, but this is gothic ;) Also DX11 is not working at all.
It's in full screen but system panel on top is visible.

Mod Installation works great with Wine
To use the D3D11 Mod you have to put
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dxgi,d3d11=n;ddraw=n,b"
in the Steam Launch Options.

It runs great, I'm adoring this game so far
Game most often crashes when alt-tabbing, I just make sure to save before alt-tabbing
I didn't mark it as an audio problem because I'm pretty sure it just doesn't have English voice acting, but there are no voices, all other sounds are working perfectly. Additionally, I recommend adding the DX11 renderer for better graphics and higher frame-rates, this version is what I am using and it didn't cause any issues https://github.com/SaiyansKing/GD3D11/releases/tag/v17.7-dev34

Played on Proton-6.21-GE-2, game launches successfully, played for a while and no issues detected so far.
Crash on alt-tab
Game got stuck while trying to quit it
