Game works perfectly on SteamDeck now that console support has been added. You can even use the back triggers now.

Descriptions can be smaller text
Since the latest update to New World bringing console support, it seems that support for the steam deck has very much improved and is no longer the mess it was a few months ago.

In-game: All settings Low, Dynamic Resolution off, 60 fps cap (game is choppy with 30 fps cap). Steam Overlay: 30 fps cap, Refresh Rate 60. Approximately 1:30-2:00 hours battery on Steam Deck OLED.
Native controller support now so no custom layouts needed.

Just tried the latest patch. No CryoUtilities or BIOS changes. Why is this game marked as "playable"? It's not.
"Playable": Nope. Starts sometimes?: Maybe. I wish I could disable some effects/details or lower textures to get this game somewhat working. "Low" is the lowest option to everything in the game. There is not OFF option on shadows etc.
It crashes every time I try to load. The starting zone might work and you can level the character. Even after CU mods and UMA changes in BIOS it loads so slow/long between fast travel locations that I get kicked for being AFK. ( or it just crashes again. )

Text is small and hard to read, but it's mostly readable.
It crashed a couple of times in around 40 hours.
It doesn't connect with a regular wifi / ethernet connection. A workaround is to set your phone as a hotspot for your deck. You need to increase the deck swap file size to 10-14GB so it doesn't crash on tp or when logging in into cities with lot sof players.
Playable if you take into account the mentioned details. A pain in the ass, but playable.

Installed Anticheat runtime.
Use CryoUtilities to increase swap size (fixes crashes on cities)
For anyone unable to play using home WiFi check your router QoS (application priority) in my TP-Link if I don't have priority enable for gaming New World is unable to login.
To play 90% of the time as 60fps i forced via game file a windowed resolution of 960x540. I. Steam set an FSR to my taste. Ingame lower nameplates to around 3/4, set everything to low, lower sound quality a bit. Set text to big, on the chat increase the size of text as well... Some text will be blurry but you can use steam magnifying glass (that you can bind on your layout)
L2 click is dodge roll and hold is block; Left track pad is a touch menu; Right track pad is my mouse (i don't use right joystick) where I disabled the trackball mode, increased the smoothing and the sensitivity.
Because of the super low resolution i am using to boost performance some text not all may be hard to read without using the magnifying glass of steam
Crashes on big cities, resolved increasing swap file size
Crashes before swap file trick
Unable to use home WiFi. Problem was solved once application priority for games was enabled on my TP-LINK router
I have been playing New World on my steam deck for as much as 360 hours or so and it's perfect for dungeons, open world activities, anything that doesn't go beyond the 10 players in screen, although I have done some chest runs (lots of players) it's doable but the frames go below 35 . With my fsr and low resolution the game is most of the time above 50fps and dungeons are 60
Powertools max CPU 2800 mhz

changed mapping of map button and camp button so you can moer easily setup camp. disabled holding the y key from the controls.
run the game on all low settings, changed this in the loading screen menu.
I cannot ever get the game to load on 5Ghz wifi, or ethernet, but once i select a 2.4 Ghz slower wifi connection, i was able to connect to the servers.
for some reason the game connecting to the servers is very reliant on the wifi network.
it used to work off a cell phone hotspot and that stopped working. but the 2.4 GHz wifi network has been fully reliable as a connection to the servers for over a month.

First i enabled developer mode and disable wifi power management. Then set everything in the ingame graphics to Low.
Tinker the radial Menu to fit my needs
Lock to 40fps and FSR 3
Game won't allow you to play higher than Low settings. or else your game will freeze after 5mins or so.
Horrible lag but this is outside steam deck because playing in AUS server from asia is the best option we have.
The game is playable but you have to do heavy tinker beforehand. Just watch Ginger Prime yt video for the tweaks in SD.
You really have to WANT to play NW on the Deck to justify the experience, best for farming materials or low intensity quests/combat.
You need to seperately download the EAC runtime from Steam, Deck needs to be on 2.4 ghz wifi network (or potentially wired?).
Low settings, capped FPS in game, capped FPS and refresh rate in Deck menu.
Game is not optimized for low resolution and small screens. Text is sometimes small, pixilated, breaks awkwardly, etc.
Won't load in big cities, performance suffers as more objects are on screen, etc.
Crashes in large cities.
Game can't connect while using 5ghz wifi, won't connect if in a large city, may crash in large cities.
A bit laggy, even in unpopulated areas. Even compaired to the baseline New World experience.
I just changed some of the shortcuts to ones I use on my personal system so the control scheme carries over. (Have some things mapped differently)
Turned down to low settings (some a bit higher), 40 fps, lowered resolution and changed from fullscreen to windowed to enable FSR. (Gives a little under 3 hours from full charge)
When you start looking at legendaries that have 4 buffs or just long worded descriptions on equipment, the text shrinks. As well, in game user chat.
I changed from M/K to Controller a month ago just to try it out so I was already used to the controls to an extent. However, can say it comes with a learning curve.
The game works well enough, but it's obvious it's not optimized for the deck just yet. I'm not sure how this site deals with links, but here is the video I followed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5NHmMDX2PI If you'd rather not click links, it's called "New World Steam Deck Ultimate Setup Guide" from the Ginger Prime Gaming channel. He shows you how to set it up. But if you prefer text: Hit Steam Key -> Settings -> System -> Enable "Developer Mode" -> Go back to main settings tab -> Scroll all the way down to Developer -> Turn off "Enable Wifi Power Management"
This alone caused enormous issues for me, as I think New World is not a fan of intermittent connections. But after doing that, ran well! I didn't try going into wars, chest runs, or OPR but I don't think it'd handle that well unless you did further optimization. Also, would advise NOT logging out in a city. Normally won't let you log back in if you're in a city. (once you're in game, going to a city is fine just not when logging in initially) I ran Tempest Heart with no issues.
I had to follow Ginger Prime's Tutorial on how to get the networking aspects of the game to run correctly.
Basically what happens is, when you run the game on Steam Deck after installing, everything runs fine, but the servers default to a region that isn't your region, plus the connection strength is extremely weak.
To fix this, you need to go to Developer options and disable WiFi power management. You also need to set the game to run the experimental build of Proton. Doing both of these things, the game runs really great on Steam Deck!
Capped Wattage at 13 watts and capped FPS at 40
This game does not offer any form of text or UI scaling and the text is on the smaller side
I have both a router and a Unifi Access Point. I can connect to servers if I use my router's Wifi signal. I cannot connect to the servers if I use my Unifi Access Point signal. This is the only game that I've tried that behaves this way. There are many reports online of strange internet related server connection issues with this game. There does not seem to be a consistent solution.
New World is playable overall. If you cap Wattage to 13 and FPS to 40, you can expect around 2.5 hours of gameplay on the Deck. I did test enabling FSR and this did not add any significant amount of battery time. There are occassional frame drops, but this appears to be true on most computers with New World. Overall it's very playable, but it also uses a considerable amount of battery.
A (for normal users) non-trivial change to the system configuration is requiered to achive a playable state.

The first time I tried it, the game and steam crashed when logging into cities or fast-traveling there. There does not seem to be enough memory available. Enlarging the swap file has fixed this problem.
You can try this at your own risk: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/waiujt/how_to_increase_the_swap_on_the_deck/
i also disabled wifi energy management because i was experiencing connection problems with my mobile hotspot.
Set FPS Limit to 30 FPS Set graphic presets to Low
The text in the game is not optimized for small displays.
As said, not enough memory. Enlargement of the swap file has fixt it.
Network issues
Game may work as is. If you recieve a unable to connect issue after character selection, use an adhoc network such as a hot spot from a phone or if you have a hard wired pc with wifi that will work as well.
If game crashes on log in, move character out of town. It is not recommended to teleport to a town as this causes chrashes as well. You can run into town once loged in.
I had to install proton easy anti cheat runtime manually via the steam store.
Limit to 30 fps, set graphics to low.
Recommend resizing chat
Easy anti cheat would not let me in the first time, but if I immediately tried again without restarting the game it worked.
Easy anti cheat did not let me log into the game initially.
If you experience errors not related to the anti cheat, try disabling wifi power saving in the developer options.

Seems this is a common issue specifically for SteamDeck when attempting to connect to NW servers while on WIFI. Users have reported using a tethered, or wired connection allows them to login and play. I have not yet been able to confirm that behavior.
Gathering and PvE works well. Navigating the menus, the map, and crafting is tedious though.
Had to manually install easy anti cheat
Change from fullscreen to windowed, change resolution to 720p or 540p (540p requires manually editing the setting for window resolution. Changes to the fullscreen resolution will be disregarded and overwritten by the game), change all settings to low, limit fps to 30.
The game ignores edits to the config file that contains the fullscreen resolution. Only editing the window resolution is supported.
I tried on a factory reset steam deck connected to 2.4 GHz Wifi. If you experience issues not related to the anti cheat, you may want to try that.
Connection error, the game doesn't start. I tried literally everything, I get always connection error.
any previous mentioned
Tried Proton Experimental, Proton-GE7-20, Proton-GE7-17. No Success. I wish I could see the ones that said "it runs for me", I cannot make it work in any possible way.
Medium Settings, 60 FPS Cap
Had to use a mobile hotspot as Wifi to connect to the server, connecting to server always failed when on normal Wifi
If you manage to log in to the world the game runs fine, some stuttering when compiling new shaders.
bash -c 'exec "${@/NewWorldLauncher.exe/bin64\/NewWorld.exe}"' -- %command%
Didn't find usable control layout made by community at the time of this review so had to make one from scratch.
10W max TDP and 30 fps cap on medium settings runs fine
Some of the text is really small, there's an option in settings to make a part of it bigger.
Logging in server sometimes gives internet access error, works 100% for me when connecting via phone.
