Crashed about every 30 minutes with the current latest proton from Steam, Fixed with alternate Proton.
Apply patches to get the game to launch at all, similar to what is needed for Modern Windows.
Had to do the same fixes listed here by several other, the update and the patched EXE for the GPU driver detection. From what I was reading, this is necessary on Windows too in many cases so buit if you like playing older games, this won't surprise you.
What is a Linux specific issue was not being able to use the current latest proton to play without having regular crashing about every 30 minutes or so. I am sure some older versions would have also worked great but the first alternate I tried was the current latest CachyOS variant and the crashing was all gone so i didn't bother testing further.
Once you get all this tidied up, the game looks and plays FANTASTIC. Well worth the few mintes of setup.

The driver warning screen does not respond to touch input and the mouse cursor is invisible/unresponsive. You can launch the game in desktop mode where the screen can be bypassed with touch input, but it will reappear on every launch, so the game can never be played in gaming mode.
Need to install this patches Updated to 1.2, available here https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=326627023 After updating to 1.2 install the CPU fix, avaible here https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1869921614 VERY IMPORTANT: After installing them, delete bin/TimeShift.Exe (note the capital letter E) in the installation folder
Works great with Proton Experimental, using mouse and keyboard @4k max settings, v-sync on (60 fps).
The game must be patched on both WIndows and Linux, before it works:
- Updated to 1.2, available here https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=326627023
- After updating to 1.2 install the CPU fix, avaible here https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1869921614
I'm not sure a typical gamer would enjoy this game but if you're here you're probably not a typical gamer
Like Neros said you need these two patches installed
https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/1026-timeshift-update-12-steam/
As of today, you need to patch the game to make it run. Nothing to do with proton, just the game itself.
Use @Neros' Patch instructions to install Update 1.2 and Timeshift.exe fix
Broken shadows: issue
To launch the game, you need to install these 2 patches:
TimeShift Update 1.2 (Steam)
TimeShift Fix for Startup Crash with > 8 Thread CPU 1.0.2
And delete bin/TimeShift.Exe
(note the capital letter E) in the installation folder

It can be done if you get past the original fiddling with the system, but it's a pain to get started and most players won't bother
Set Vista compatibility through protontricks. Use Glorious Eggroll proton-5.9-GE-8-ST
Had to fiddle with alt-tab to find game after it first launched
Slight performance jitters due to shaders not being compiled beforehand. If done beforehand, you'll be fine
Incompatible Video Driver message followed by crash to desktop
Crashes after the "Incompatible Video Driver" message, when the "Play" button is pressed with the "Unhandled Exception" error message.
Full play-through with mouse and keyboard
After launching the game, a window pops up complaining about incompatible video drivers but it can be ignored by hitting Play.
Crashes after incompatible video driver message

Games would crash immediately at start up, tried different versions of proton. Tested using laptop with egpu (Vega 56) even though system spec says integrated graphics. Only game in my library I cannot get to run so not a problem with egpu setup.

loads into splash screen while loading shaders, then execution fails

After further testing, since previous report, the ESYNC launch option may cause issues with the loading of levels. But with the default config, the game works great out of the box. It does seem to take a little bit to load the shaders, but other than that, it works without issue.

It seemed a little stuttery at first, and it took longer than I expected to load the shaders, but after I disabled Esync, it ran buttery smooth, and the shaders loaded really quickly.

Incompatible video driver message, crashes afterwards.

Incompatible Video Driver message. Works fine after selecting play.
