FFXI runs better on Linux with higher degree of compatibility than on a modern Windows OS
I found it difficult to get the game itself running because of the whoops involved with the launcher and the process to get into the game itself is pretty complicated. This shouldn't be held against the Proton since these same problems exist on Windows as well. All the settings did work as intended and I didn't find any faults that are worth mentioning. However I absolutely have to add that like with e.g. Delta Force 2... the FFXI runs in-fact better with Proton than in actual real Windows environment. There are some bugs and glitches in FFXI on Windows which do not make an appearance on Linux when run through Proton. For example, by using FFXI PS2 release as a reference point, some of the weather patterns such as rain and mist look and work as intended on Linux where as on Windows they sometimes are missing or visually broken. Also I don't recommend attempting to break the intended FFXI out-of-box experience. When modded with suitable utilities to break free of the 30 FPS limit this game has it can in-fact run so much faster than on Windows that it becomes a problem in and itself.
Installed correctly but fails to playback of videos and loading of background images and crashes at main menu
Installed fine. When running I was able to see the launcher and start the game. However it failed to show intro video but I was able to hear the sound from it. In main menu it failed to load background so it was just completely black. Upon entering first level of the main menu I could see the white selection texts at bottom right but the game crashes if I press any key or button trying to activate them. The game also crashes anyway if left on its own for a while.
Ran like a native title without much issues. At first there was a small controller issue where inputs from two different controllers was read simultaneously as if it was the only input from gamepad #1 but restarting the Steam with controllers hooked in fixed that problem.
Quake Enhanced release is borked
Can be downloaded and installed. Will not launch. I'm not sure if workaround exists yet or if there's a problem in my configuration which prevents it from working.
I couldn't get Quake enhanced playable on a Fedora PC. But my Gentoo PC it run fine with Proton Experimental. I completed ep.1 on Nightmare.
As the game progressed, minor stuttering in a jitter pattern started to appear when moving. It's something to do with the settings of the game itself.
The Quake Enhanced edition isn't running on top of Quake Engine. It's using KEX Engine and it just doesn't feel right. Movement is different and a lot of the in-game aspects such as physics, jumping tricks have significant differences. Textures are different and a lot of the look and feel has been altered to the point that this should have been its own entry in Steam Library like Quake 2 RTX and not thrown on top of the existing Quake Steam Libary entry like Bethesda did with Doom. Also it ruins running QuakeWorld and does a lot of other things that I consider harmful. Multiplayer doesn't seem to work in Proton in Enhanced Edition for one reason or another. Bethesda.net account linking is required for multiplayer to function.
Installed d3dcompiler_47.dll using Protontricks.
It should be stressed that at this time you absolutely need to use protontricks to install d3dcompiler_47.dll to make this title run as intended or it will crash after initial launcher screen. I installed Protontricks from Gentoo repositories and it was only a minor inconvenience from my perspective. Others might want to stay away for now until Valve brings actual fix to their official Proton release. Also I didn't play the game more than 30 minutes. There might be other issues that I don't know yet.
Will install correctly but after initial runtime installation will not launch
At first I used standard Proton versions that come from the Steam. The game has an issue where it will initially fail installing GfWL runtime. It needs to be disabled at least because 404 error since Microsoft is not providing files any longer. In my case it was a mistake attempting to install GfWL redistributable runtime because it resulted borked pfx directory and as a result Proton won't launch. Copy XLive.dll into pfx/c_drive/windows/syswow64 and it should get pass the launcher.exe issue.
Then it will launch and likely shows Capcom logo and other static image logos. But once the main intro video sequence is supposed to start it will only show black screen. I've attempted to redeem this by using protontricks to install wmp9 and wmp11 components but these did not resolve the issue.
After that I've attempted to e.g. bleeding edge Proton Experimental but that didn't resolve this issue either. I'm running out of ideas and having spent 4 hours into debugging this I deemed it not worth further attempts.
This game required a lot of tinkering to make it work but once I did figure it out it ran mostly flawlessly
- I tested several newer Proton versions. The only 5.0-10 worked for me.
- Before you launch RE5, go to its directory and edit
"~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Resident Evil 5/BH5AE_install.vdf"
and remove GfW Live Marketplace web installer "Run Process" section. - Do a one time start-up for the game so that it will create its wineprefix directory.
- Use protontricks to install wmp11 components. Run
protontricks 21690 -q wmp11
. - Next download a copy of GfWL runtime offline installer. It's a file called xliveredist.msi and is about 21 MB in size.
- After that run
protontricks 21690 --gui
which opens up a window where you can click and select "use the default wineprefix". Run wine explorer, navigate to a place where you downloaded the xliveredist.msi and run and install it like you'd on Windows. - Edit the launch parameters for RE5 and add
-dx9
to it. - Try launching the game.
- Mod which removes GfWL from the binaries caused more issues for me than it resolved.
- Be prepared to debug this game long and hard to make it work.
- Be prepared to think outside of the box when it comes to fixing framerate, loading, etc. performance related issues.
- Do not attempt installing wmp9 with protontricks
- Do not just copy the XLive.dll and expect things to work.
- Do not attempt to use the full GfWL redistributable package which also includes GfWL Marketplace and Windows Live log-in components even though that's what the RE5's web installer would install.
- Do not attempt to run this game at Direct3D 10 mode, it's very buggy even in Windows.
- If you're having issues with graphics or the game doesn't launch, check that you're using RADV driver if you've got AMD Radeon graphics card.
It worked like a native title. Had minor controller configuration issue at first and I don't know if it was fault of the game or Proton or unrelated but it was resolved by simply restarting of the Steam client with all the different controllers hooked up to the system.
