To start the game, -novideo has to be added to the start options. With Proton 3.16-4 I had crashes sometimes (not often) when the game loads a new area --- sometimes the progress bar freezes, sometimes the game crashed with an out of memory error. So I switched to Proton 3.16-6 Beta and added PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 to the startup command line. Now the game runs perfectly.
Works out of the box without issues
There is a small green bar at the bottom of the screen in the main menu. But it disappears when in the game.
The game itself runs smooth with good performance and without any issues or crashes. Only the launcher is sometimes a bit bitchy and crashes on startup. Simply starting the launcher a second time helps.
If the game (and the entire desktop) hangs every few seconds, it helps to minimize the launcher in the background.
The game runs as it should without any problems. Only the face of the selected character, which is shown in the upper left corner, is darkened by a shadow.
