This port (in general, not just on linux) has some noticeable audio quality issues when compared to the PSX version.
Alt-Tabbing would result in the game refusing to accept any more input and force my to close the program. On the positive side, this has very minor ramifications since the game auto-saves a "bookmark" save on every screen transition and major scene change, so resuming from where you left off last would be simple in these circumstances.

MOGURI MOD INSTALL (Tested on MoguriMod 8.2.1)
Moguri Mod installation was tricky on this system, but installing it will be a good gateway into the installation of other mods that don't use dedicated windows installers.
Alternate Fantasy Mod (and Bugs)
Alternate fantasy is simple to install once Moguri Mod (or base Memoria Mod Manager) is installed. Simply extract the assets into the root directory of FFIX's steamapps/common folder and make sure to add the folder to the active mods configuration line -- found within Memoria.ini.
Summary
Final Fantasy IX on the PC is slowly becoming what I would call the definitive version of FFIX, especially with the above mods installed. Moguri obviously adds a level of polish to the background assets that are missing from the PC version, while Alternate Fantasy provides a rebalance that adds some more difficulty and minor additional content that fits within the vision of the original game.
Screen flickering on certain character matchups (major), missing scene transition FX (minor)
Fullscreen on my KDE machine would render other elements occasionally. Pressing F11 twice on reboot works as a quick fix.
The game would occasionally lock up on my machine when winning or losing a round when messages appeared. Running with PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 resolved this issue.
