After booting and showing the initial logo and loading screen, the game crashes.
Couldn't be better. The game works buttery smooth with support for all the features - even mods work!
Every like 30 minutes the whole game froze for about 2 seconds. Beyond that, no issues. I'm willing to bet I'd experience this issue on Windows as well.
Tested in both VR and Desktop, multiple Proton versions. A wonderfully Windows-like experience. Delightful to see in the world of Proton.
User must manually create the folder "drive_c/users/steamuser/Local Settings/Application Data/Elite Dangerous Launcher_evidencehere" in their Proton prefix's C drive to boot the desktop app. Additionally, as mentioned in other notes, to get the launcher to work you should install the custom Mono version from this contribution. Keep circulating the link, folks.
The VR app does not use the launcher, and thus will work regardless.
Launching the ARX store will crash the game.
There were no issues supporting any of my controllers, but deadzone issues can be configured using evdev-joystick
.
Highly recommended. Linux version is outdated, and the game runs fine on Proton.
Steam Input for this game, which was broken on windows, works on Linux with Proton due to the different way Wine reports controller information to the game. If you have a Steam Controller, Proton is the best way to play this game.
Get stuck on black screens? The game uses a ton of prerendered videos and doesn't error-handle them properly. Install Proton-GE.
Game takes longer to load anything if it cannot play videos (????) so you need to use GE. Even then, the game often takes significantly longer than you'd think to load and continues needing to load things after the loading screen. This seems to be a problem on Windows as well.
Running with Proton results in a flickering DOSBox SVN-Daum command prompt. No game runs.
You can just install a native version of DOSBox and run the game directly in that.
It works, but no VOIP kind of kills the mood and troubleshooting woes can make it more difficult to play than Windows.
VOIP does not work at all. No inbound or outbound audio.
Sometimes the game just doesn't respond to your controllers and the headset orbits around some strange axis. You'll need to swap around the various Proton versions and reboot SteamVR a couple of times to get it working.
Occasionally selecting an option in the graphical menu will cause stuttering. If your hardware should support the setting, simply deselect it and select it again.
If the game crashes randomly, downgrade to Proton 4.2 and upgrade in increments, each time launching the game with the given Proton version, turning it up, and restarting. Proton versions higher than 5.0-9 seem to invariably crash the game.
Deleting the `compatdata` folder is the weirdest fix I've ever tried, but it works. Only minor performance issues. Completely playable.
-dx11
The game seems to run slightly worse on DX12, so downgrading to DX11 is a must. Even in DX11land there is some unusual slowness compared to my Windows install.
Occasionally I would be unable to play games with the error "TFGE0001". Deleting the compatdata
folder for THE FINALS and restarting the game seems to always fix it. (The error seems to stand for "The Finals General Exception")
Just as expected. Better frames and equal experience on Linux as I do on Windows with no issues.
Following the rest of the report, I have had zero issues with multiplayer functionality. Everything works as expected.
A few reports were suggesting issues with Workshop models or items. I have not experienced any bugs with the game that werent reproducable on Windows. I both attempted to reproduce on my Windows Laptop and had a friend with a Windows install confirm the bugs when I couldn't.
After upgrading my CPU I am now getting solid frames with VRChat on Proton 5 despite minor issues with the camera.
In game, I could only select one microphone audio source called "Pulseaudio". Changing microphone input had to be done through pavucontrol. This is only a minor problem though.
Every time a camera item is spawned, the game stability degrades just a bit more. Spawning a camera 4 times can slow the game to a crawl while the camera is out.
Any issues with software stability tend to be what I'd expect from VRChat, even on Windows.
90% of VRChat features work out of the box. I'll report how creating content for VRChat works on Linux later.
YouTube streams do not play, regardless of if I have an updated youtube-dl.exe or not. The worlds do not crash for me, however.
VR Works fine for me with regards to VRChat's functionality, but SteamVR on Linux is in such a horribly shoddy beta state that the average user will have a terrible time. SteamVR is prone to making the system lock up randomly, does not have base station power management, and sometimes the dashboard just refuses to start at all. It's a complete mess.
Black background, then crash after "Press Any Key".
If the other reports are to be believed, my high-core CPU may be at fault here, and reducing the number of cores in use with a boot flag will fix it. This is not optimal, so hopefully this will be fixed properly soon.
