No tinkering needed, works like a charm out of the box.
Performance was slightly worse than on Windows. Slightly lowering graphics settings easily made up for it.
Near-native experience. You should set graphics settings from the launcher.

Mouse pointer was visible in the middle of the screen while using controller (standard ps4 dualshock) as input. Probably a steam play issue.
Very good singleplayer experience with Proton GE. Simple tinkering needed for multiplayer.
Crashed once in 4 hours of play. Friend simultaneously playing with me on a Windows machine also crashed at a different point, so seems to be a NMS issue rather than Proton related.
Protontricks is not needed, you can run WINEPREFIX='path/to/steam/steamapps/compatdata/275850/pfx winetricks win7
in the terminal for multiplayer.
Great experience, the game can be unstable at times due to the nature of it being in early access. Did not try VR.

Native version was unplayable due to broken features (wrong in-game calculations, missing textures, bugs) but running the game with Proton fixed all issues. No discernable performance difference between versions.
