Works perfectly after adding the launch options mentioned if you're using a Threadripper CPU and using the GE fork
6.1-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Custom Proton used: https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom
Add taskset -c 0-15 %command% to launch arguments if you're using a Threadripper CPU for media foundation videos to work
Works perfectly using the GE fork, with the additional launch options necessary if you're on a Threadripper CPU
Videos do not play even with the GE Proton fork if you are using a Threadripper CPU
Use taskset -c 0-15 %command% if you're on a Threadripper CPU for videos to work
Runs nearly perfect with a mild performance hit (as with all games run with Proton) and some mild stuttering that is present occasionally
Added PROTON_NO_GLSL=1 %command%
to the launch options which seems to help with stuttering
A bit of stuttering when initially playing and loading new areas but it goes away eventually
Works mostly perfect aside from some characters not looking right in the menus, videos play fine if you use the workaround mentioned
In order to get videos to work, you need to run protontricks 822760 quartz devenum
and then protontricks 822760 winecfg
. Once winecfg opens, go to Libraries and add winegstreamer
as disabled
Some text was not displayed properly in the menus and the game. This is not a problem for the game as you can change the font used in the settings, but for the menus I have yet to find a solution
As long as you have an RTX 2070 or better, you should be able to enjoy Horizon Zero Dawn at 60 FPS on near-max (high) settings.
Game runs slower than on Windows, about a 20% drop in FPS (getting about 60 with drops to 50-45 on max settings on Linux, whereas Windows was able to maintain a stable 60+ FPS)
There is a decent performance hit so your hardware will have to compensate for the performance loss.
As long as you use the GE fork of Proton with the Wine D3D argument, the game should play perfect together with videos
https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom GloriousEggroll
Proton GE fork is necessary for videos to play
Using Wine D3D is necessary for KiriKiri (the engine the game runs on) sprites/animations to work properly and for the game to start without a black screen, based off my experience in other visual novels running on the same engine.
To get videos with audio working in the game, it is necessary to do the following:
- Download LAV Filters 0.74.1 Installer to a convenient location (in my case, I saved it at ~/Downloads)
- Browse to the game's compatdata folder (
steamapps/compatdata/1460490
) in the terminal - Once there in the terminal, run
WINEPREFIX=$PWD/pfx wine ~/Downloads/LAVFilters-0.74.1-Installer.exe
- Install LAVFilters with the default settings (just keep pressing next)
- After it is installed, run
protontricks 1460490 winecfg
- In the winecfg window, go to Libraries and add
winegstreamer
as disabled - Apply and hit Ok

Performance seems to be slightly worse than Windows, as with most games running on Proton
Everything outside of the opening (which should be the only movie in the game) not playing works perfect if you use the workaround given
This is necessary to get the game to show instead of starting in a black screen. Alternatively, to get the game to show without the argument, launch it, click yes/no on the Direct3D error that shows up, and once it reboots, press ALT to open the top menu which should fix the black screen
Opening/movies do not play
Everything works (including videos) if you install wmp11 and use the workaround mentioned

Works perfectly if you use the GE fork of Proton and the launch arguments mentioned to fix audio issues
Proton-6.1-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Stuttering audio can be fixed by adding PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 %command%
to the launch options
