If you have a non QWERTY keyboard, you need to use setxkbmap us to switch your keyboard to QWERTY in a way compatible with the game. Changing the layout in the KDE system settings does not work.

As mentioned in the other comments, the game does not run unless you run the protontricks command above. After this command, I was able to play the whole game without any issue (no crash or other problem).
I can create the character but when I start the game the intro video is black. I have white subtitles but no audio or image. The game gets stuck on the intro: I cannot skip it or wait it out.
Frequent crashes on Proton 8.0-3
After updating to Proton 8.0-3, the game crashes a lot. In particular I was never able to complete the floor "Mine"/"Ashpit" due to crashes. Proton version 7.0-6 does not have those issues and works very well.
The crashes can break runs
Occasionally crashes when using bombs
Tested with Proton 8.0-4
Occasional but regular crashes when using bombs; breaks runs. I see some other similar reports, I'll try to test other Proton versions.
Played hundreds of hours without issues with Proton 7. I strongly recommend using this version (I posted a report two months ago with Proton 8, where using bombs caused regular crashes)
Native version crashes and does not start
In case it's relevant, I'm using KDE Plasma 6 on Wayland.
