For some reason I couldn't get achievements when using the default version of Proton. Proton Experimental and GE-Proton8-27 also didn't work. Proton 8.0-5 did the trick.
Controller works, but it must be plugged in before launching the game. This seems to be a limitation of the game, rather than Proton's though.
I could not load with the default version of Proton, but some trial and error showed that Proton 6.3-6 works.
Launch options: PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
The game would intermittently fail to launch with various Proton versions. For some reason, enabling logging fixes the issue; I got the game to run consistently so far.
The game itself worked perfectly. I had to use GloriousEggroll's build to get Steam achievements to work.
6.5-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
In vanilla Proton, I did not get any Steam achievements. Using GloriousEgroll's Proton-6.5-GE-2
worked.
Symlinking GNOG.x86_64
to GNOG.exe
worked
This is an odd one. The game does come with native binaries for Linux, so Proton/Wine is not even needed, but Steam still tries to execute GNOG.exe
. (An oversight on the devs' side, perhaps? Linux compatibility is not listed in the store page, for example.) Creating a symbolic link to the native executable makes Steam happy and the game works flawlessly.
Could not get controller working in the native version. Worked flawlessly under the default configuration of Proton 6.3-5.
Even with various combinations of Proton and `protontricks`, videos still don't play properly
protontricks 368370 ffdshow l3codecx winxp directshow
Playing videos crashes the game
I tried several versions of Proton, with and without the protontricks
command, and none of them were able to get the game to function properly. The closest I got was with Proton 4.11-13 and protontricks 368370 ffdshow l3codecx winxp directshow
: the first few frames of each video plays and I can hear the audio, but the game freezes until the video ends.
I did manage to get the game working on Linux using a 32-bit installation of the vanilla Wine, version wine-6.6
, and winetricks ffdshow l3codecx directshow
. (These are the same settings that Lutris has for the DRM-free version in GOG.) Proton does not seem to support 32-bit prefixes, so a vanilla Wine installation was needed.
I had to set the graphics to "Fastest" but it ran flawlessly otherwise.
The game crashed in the final cutscene; setting the graphics to "Fastest" solved the issue.
Some performance issues, but works very well overall
I had to tune down the graphics settings to keep the framerate high
I noticed some stuttering in the tutorial, right when the tutorial cards appear in the screen, and also in the beginning of the race of some of the later tracks (maybe some elements were still loading?)
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%
The entry point for this game is boot.bat
, which executes launcher.exe
, which finally opens Game.exe
. More recent versions of Proton seemed to trip on boot.bat
, but the vanilla Proton 6.3-8 works. (I had rendering issues with Glorious Egroll's Proton builds; I could hear sound and interact with the game, but the screen was completely blank. Vanilla Proton did the trick.)
The audio has some crackling, but setting PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%
fixes it.
Runs well, only has a minor glitch with fullscreen
I had to toggle fullscreen off and on again every time I launched the game.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
The game launches and plays using the latest Proton, as well as several recent Glorious Eggroll's proton builds; however, I was only able to get Steam achievements to unlock with Proton 4.11-13.
A few crashes but works otherwise
The game crashed half a dozen times during playthrough, which ends up being not that bothersome because the game is short
It took me a while to figure out that Origin would not install with Proton 5.13 but worked with 5.0-10...
In my machine the game launched with a framerate of 1fps; disabling vsync fixed the issue.
I applied the workarounds from here and the launch options from here and had no issue with alt-tabbing.
Works with Proton 5.0-10; the game crashes after beating level 5 with newer versions (presumably due to the achievement)
Game works, but at uncomfortably low FPS.
The graphics ran at about 10 FPS, even on the lowest setting. Not unplayable, but very uncomfortable.
