tried Proton Expirmental, 8.x and 7.x.

I'm using Steam from AUR and this is only one of several games that dont work. im going to try the flatpack version of Steam next.
if you dont mind it being 100% single player. seems it works for some, not for me.
drop in frame rate when lots of things are loading/moving
multiplayer worked using proton version 4.11-13
general fuzziness, perhaps due to old version of proton?
auto save causes an FPS drop for ~1 second
1st time, Game would not start until i forced the use of proton expiremental. Then i disabled "force compatability" in Steam and its fine.
its not perfect, but id say 95% as good as Windows 10 overall
As Per the ProtonDB help page, https://github.com/FeralInteractive/gamemode is required to fix performance issues (Frame rate stuttering and massive drops in FPS). Wreckfest was nearly unplayable without it; even with the graphics on their lowest settings. With Gamermode, graphics settings are back up to where i had them for Windows 10.
