Game runs well out of the box, although I noticed that when you are starting up game and not doing anything, it will freeze your computer completely which needs cold reboot to fix. Workaround for this is to just move mouse or check other stuff while game initially loads(may take some time). After that it works fine ~60 FPS occasional stutter(quite rare).
At first start game would crash right after character/save has been loaded. So like many have suggested,I have opened file: TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML file, found at : ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/No Man's Sky/Binaries/SETTINGS then found following option "TerrainTessellation" and for that option I have set "GraphicDetail" value to be equal to "Low".
After this tweak, game did not crash occasional stuttering happens and sometimes textures on Frigates do not load, specifically place between hangar and bridge. I cannot remember exactly what fixed it(happens rarely though) recalling the frigate or just going into another system will work.
Additional note: MODS work without any problems, just gotta pay attention to file conflicts which is noted on mods description page usually.
Game runs fine when native mode is used, however with Proton I have noticed that it runs even better, there is no stuttering or FPS drops. However with Plasma KDE(unsure about other Desktop Environments) if game is set to Borderless, the task bar will overlap the game, pressing Alt+F3 then going into 'More Actions' and choosing Fullscreen solves this minor issue.
I did leave review like two weeks ago but I forgot to mention one thing, when running as native, I noticed memory leaks at first memory usage is about 1.6GBs but after playing it skyrockets to 5GB of RAM. Switching to Proton solved this completely and memory usage stays at about 1.3GB of RAM. If you do notice memory leaks, just run game through proton and you will be good to go.
Game ran perfectly well out of the box, played several hours, exited out of it, played again but next day I believe I got 'color' issue with the UI, basically character and environment were black but UI elements were visible and had color distortion.
This problem was fixed by going into Properties, then click on Set Launch Options and type following: PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% This will enable esync and game runs smoothly with it.
I would like to point out that I tried using following setting: PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% like many have suggested, however FPS drop was bad, playable but can get you killed if you are not careful, it was somewhere between 15 and 30, enabling esync solved color distortion and FPS remained unaffected.
Last note, after character is selected and you press that "Play the game button", loading time is insanely long, not sure if this happens on Windows as well but only at this time this happens, in other parts of the game loading is fast.
Alt-Tab-ing and returning to the game is not so friendly when it comes to native version. Game is frozen for a bit after returning to it.
When switching from Native to Proton version game progression got lost but it was fixed easily. Just move saves from Linux path to Windows like path and it will work without any additional tweaks.
Running game with Proton 6.3-8 and gamemoderun %command% as launch option works far better than native version.
Occasional audio output source switching but it is likely OS problem than game itself. As in audio output source would switch between several options which would cause game to really slow down.
Problems mentioned are referred to native version, running game through proton and gamemoderun %command% removes all of these problems. Mods work without any config on both native and proton.
