Some versions of mesa appear to cause frequent crashes (mostly on fast travel after a period of play), but other versions of mesa are fine.
This game either runs perfectly stable, or crashes frequently, depending on my mesa driver version. Currently on mesa 23.3.1 and am not experiencing stability issues.
Every once in a while, launching the game will freeze on a whitescreen. Killing all wine processes and completely exiting steam then re-launching steam appears to fix this.
If you are an AMD GPU user having stability issues, try a different version of mesa.
Broken on steam
Tried adding this to engine.ini:
[/script/onlinesubsystemos.eossettings]
CacheDir=C:\Users\steamuser\AppData\Local\MidnightGhostHunt\Saved
which somewhere mentioned could help with the "Game not launched with EOS bootstrap" error. It did not help.
Tried default proton, proton experimental, and proton GE 8.27. Tried using winetricks to uninstall EOS. Tried tweaking Engine.ini. Tried importing steam version of the game into Heroic and launching it from there, as well as adding heroic's version of the game to steam and launching it from steam. Nothing will get past the "Midnight Ghost Hunt was not started with EOS bootstrapper. Please re-launch the game through Steam." error.
Works OOTB after waiting for shader compilation. Possible memory leak.
The blur used to give the background a sense of depth has mild aliasing on low settings.
PS5 controller suddenly swapped R and L triggers after several hours of working normally. This persisted through restarts of the game, but is correctable in steam controller settings.
After shader compilation, fps is comparable to Windows.
When closing the game, roughly 4GB of RAM is not de-allocated. Starting and stopping the game multiple times without a reboot will result in OOM conditions because of this. Game is playable despite this, but you may find a reboot is required after closing the game.
Plug and play.
A long time ago there were issues with the microsoft sign in not working, but they've since been resolved.
Set ["streamer dedicated budget"] = 1024
in graphic settings.cfg
.
Disable steam input to get dualsense to work, otherwise your camera will spin.
Major stuttering every few seconds regardless of in-game graphics settings
GPU crashed once in 16 hours of play. Crash happened while streaming through Discord.
Adjusting the graphic settings.cfg
can help you get rid of bloom and glare, which makes the game look much better. Increasing ["streamer dedicated budget"]
appears to reduce but not eliminate stuttering. Stutters occur about every 3 seconds and last for roughly a quarter of a second, post-tweaks.
In graphic settings.cfg
, set ["streamer dedicated budget"] = 1024
as well as a few other cosmetic options not available in-game (like disabling bloom and glare).
Disabled steam-input for dualsense. With steam-input enabled, camera would spin when dualsense was connected.
Typically gigabyte motherboards would have above 4g decoding
enabled but rebar disabled. I had horrible stutters in this game until I also explicitly enabled rebar
in bios.
Increasing streamer dedicated budget in graphic config.cfg
should be considered a requirement. The default value is way too low and will cause poor performance and low quality textures, even on ultra.
PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%
In some areas I've noticed that if you move the camera quickly, there's some artifacting in corners of rooms. In the corners, from floor to ceiling, it's almost as if there is z-fighting, which causes the skybox to be visible in a tall thin verticle line for a moment. This is not always reproducible, and I haven't been able to identify a cause.
The issue here is with DWM. Switching to a different tag, then switching back to the tag the game is running on will be broken, and the game will require a restart.
Adding launch option PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command% resolved all performance problems. I can now play 1920x1080 with settings maxed out (no motion blur or DoF) at 60fps with excellent frame pacing. Before launch options, I had to reduce resolution and still experienced lower FPS than expected, and mild stuttering.
Before this game became Steam Deck verified, it was unplayable due to periodic crashing. This is 100% stable and ultra playable. Launch option for directX 9 is not required but it will most likely increase your FPS.
