I think that a typical gamer would not enjoy the game due to the occasional hick-ups, especially the ones related to frame rate drops.
As others already said, the framerate drops in new areas (seems to be a problem with asset streaming). One chapter was unplayable (<10 FPS) for me, requiring me to drop the resolution.
The game crashed some times during the transition of chapters. It is easily fixed by restarting the game, the auto-save spots are perfectly placed right before each chapter so you won't loose any progress.
Perfectly playable. Only problematic when creating incredibly large systems in the system designer
When creating large solar systems in the system designer the game crashes from time to time (talking about >10GB RAM usage).
Game is absolutely fluent and runs great even with bigger solar systems. My average RAM load was about 10GB whilst playing on a big map. No stuttering only crashed in the system designer with an incredibly large system whilst customizing the surface of a planet. Didn't test multiplayer, but I assume it works. Global chat worked fine.
I tried nearly all installed proton and proton-ge versions, I stopped at 4.11-13 which removed the freezes in multiplayer.
Game froze on Alt-Tab, as already known. Works fine in borderless and windowed.
I get consistent 45 FPS on all quality settings, odd.
Controller support is absolutely native, I used a wireless xbox one controller with the microsoft dongle. Even on the fly switching form mouse and keyboard to controller was detected by the game and the "controls explanation" before each mini-game got changed on the fly.
Locks the super-key thus disabling the option of killing the game without the "ingame" exit button. Other monitors turn black.
Started with a resolutions set to be cross monitor, some controls were outside my monitors resolution. Locked super-key, so no way of exiting it on i3.
