Native has some weird glitches (like "character is immune to their own feat" messages). Proton has none of those, and >=parity performance.
-force-d3d9
The game was unstable to the point of progression-blocking (requiring loading of older saves and continuing from there), both on the native version and Windows one under Proton. Error logs pointed to a shader-related problem and problem not being Linux-specific, -force-d3d9 with Proton version thus far appears to have resolved that issue.
If you are experiencing crashes seemingly by random, try -force-d3d9 command line argument, which appears to have solved the issue for me. Doesn't appear to be Linux-specific issue.
Only issue I experienced is shader compilation lagging the game out when first exploring areas.
Shader compilation causes the game to lag out when first exploring the areas, otherwise the performance is fine. Enabling ACO shader compiler by adding the following to launch options largely resolved the issue:
gamemoderun RADV_PERFTEST=aco %command%
