Game must first be launched in desktop mode to disable fullscreen before it is playable in gaming mode. Requires additional ingame settings and steam controller settings changes for proper controller support.
Environmental Station Alpha works on the Steam Deck, but requires changing some settings in desktop mode first. Once the Steam logo appears in the task manager, You can use the touchpads to launch the game, or you can hook up an external keyboard/mouse temporarily.

For best results, change the settings in this exact order:
D-Pad Only: On (This actually makes it stick only, but stops the infinite scrolling up bug with gamepad controls.)
Controls: Gamepad
Fullscreen: OFF

Close game then swap to Gaming mode. Then we make the dpad usable below.
Steam controller settings for ESa
D-Pad behavior: Joystick
Haptics: Off
Reduced TDP to 7 or 8 watts
By default the game launches windowed at 2/3rd native resolution, which makes text hard to read
Ear-destroying overlapping audio bug after disabling the 4 coolant terminals.
To play native res you must hook up a keyboard and hit alt-enter. I did this in Desktop mode but it may also be possible in Gaming mode. This will throw a bunch of errors the first time it's done even on Windows.
External keyboard required
On first launch, the game will ask you to type in a profile name. Unfortunately, the virtual keyboard does not work here, you WILL need an external keyboard to type one in. Once you do that, you can disconnect the keyboard and go back to built-in controls. The game runs perfectly.
