Game runs great and looks really good now ! (tried it a few months back and was not even launching!)
Performance is excellent at high settings with AMD FidelityFX and auto scaling,
VSync enabled, 1080p monitor.
60fps with dips to 40, overall very good experience and boy is this game beautiful!
Steam controller support is flawless, can't wait to test it on my steam deck, when it arrives in 2077 !
(did NOT try it on my 32:9 1440p ultrawide monitor as I wanted to play on the couch but I bet that would bring my old rig to it's knees anyways!)
Everything works seamlessly after activating steam play and "unverified games". Steady 60fps with V-Sync enabled (I always enable V-Sync!)
People report needing vcrun2010, it was already installed on my default WINE prefix, can't tell if it made a difference.
The game wouldn't launch when it was installed on my NAS as my native Linux games normally do (UNRAID NFS share). As soon as I switched the files to my local Steam folder, it fired-up right away... did not investigate this issue as I don't really care.. it is a small game, I don't mind installing it locally.
I played "Grow Home" natively on Linux (previous chapter of this game) and can't tell any difference in the experience... They both behave the same!
Great game, butter smooth on the deck. There is the issue of the launch option since autumn 2022, just enter the corrected launch option...
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
With steam voice chat, the experience was amazing!
For the game to work in "gaming" mode on the deck, this "launch options" needs to be entered in the general option menu: PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
SIDE NOTE
If the text is unreadable, you probably have variable rate shading enabled... disable it, it screws-up text in most games...
# Amazing game! Runs amazingly on Linux! great experience!
Cloud saving also saves the monitor resolution, which has you re-set it when you switch device... Appart from that, it is flawless !
- First note... To all those who said that text is blurry... turn-off "variable rate shading"... this feature is broken anyways, and cripples text in all games where I tried it!
- Second note... If you want to enjoy games on the deck, or in general, turn-off the freaking FPS overlay! It ruins the immersion, and makes you mad about performance, when in fact, the game plays well, is fun, and have very few moments where framerate is an issue enough for you to notice (mainly when weather changes, in a new area, and many things are loading at once on screen... and it is temporary.)
Here is my final report:
Stop thinkering, and play the game... FPS are not fun, games are, and this one is AMAZING! Best game I played in years, and the Deck is perfect to play it!
Stuck on black screen at game start? Just erase the intro videos (some useless promo banners before the game starts) and you are good to go!
If it boots to a black screen, go in [yourSteampath]/steamapps/common/It Takes Two/Nuts/Content/Movies and delete all videos
It booted perfectly on my "dry run" (I do that before gaming nights with friends) but would boot to a black screen after that... Ruined my night with my friends! If it boots to a black screen, go in [yourSteamPath]/steamapps/common/It Takes Two/Nuts/Content/Movies and delete all mp4 video files. After that runs smooth as butter (these are videos showing banners before the game starts... Someone mentionned it in a previous post but gave no clue as how to find said videos! Spent more than an hour trying to fix this)
This is a message to the community here, when you find a fix to a game and write about it here, please be precise in how you fixed it! Would have saved my gaming night!
As suggested earlier, I added a file named "dxvk.conf"
in the game's path
/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/STAR WARS Battlefront
And added the following content inside:
dxgi.customVendorId = 1c06
The game runs great, works nicely with the steam controller, an overall good experience.
Modding is another beast... I borked the game 4-5 times trying to make Local Multiplayer work with the Nexus Mod... Stll no success!
Unfortunately, the local multiplayer (split screen) feature is disabled on the PC version. That is not WINE or Proton's fault, it is EA and their constant anti-consumer practices. There is a mod to re-enable the local multiplayer mode (still present in the game's code, just disabled) but I was not able to make it work yet on Proton...
With AMD GPU, you NEED to create a dxvk.conf file to run this game, Steam does not do it by itself... If you have NVidia GPU, Linux must be a pain for you, I am sorry!
